Be it known thatI. JOHN E. GLAHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ties, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates generally to ties, but more particularly to an attaching means for ties whereby the tie may he readily used with a straight or turn-down collar.

Much inconvenience has been experienced heretofore in wearing ready-made ties with turn-down collars, and as a result it is almost impossible to dispose of ready-made ties provided with bands to wearers of tu r11-down collars. y i

As many persons find it necessary to use ready-made ties, particularly that kind resembling the four-in-hand,which are known as Teck ties,7 it is desirable to provide means for securing the tie to the collar without having recourse to the band usually employed; also, bow and puff ties.

With the employment of my invention, however, the diflicnlty is obviated and a tie constructed in accordance with my invention may readily be converted into an article suitable to be worn with'any style collar.

In order to fully appreciate the advantages and novel arrangement of parts embodied in my invention, reference Ashonldlbe had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure'l represents arear view of a Teck tie constructed in accordance with my in-V vention and provided with the attaching device, though not in use. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the attaching device in use, and Fig. 3 is a rear view of a bow-tie snpplied with an attaching device. f

The reference-numeral l designates a Teck tie provided with the usual band 2 and guiding-slot 3. In addition to the construction above noted I provide at the top edgeof they tie a hinged iiap 4, Vadapted to fold over the back of the tie and be fastened by a clasp 5, preferably of the glove-fastener type. In the center of the iap 4 is an opening 6 in the form of a keyhole-slot, which is designed to engage the front collar-button of the wearer. In the rear of the apron 7 of the tie is a slit 8, forming a pocket for the reception of the attaching device when it is not in use. This attaching device consists of two wings 9 and 10, which are connected by a restricted portion 1l of approximately the width of the tie and which is designed to lie within the fold formed by attachingthe flap to the tie.

When the tie is used on ordinary straight collars, the attaching device will remain in the pocket formed by the slit 8; but when worn with a turn-down collar the band 2 will be folded across the tie, as shown in Fig. 2, and the free end of the band will be deposited in the pocket. The restricted portion of the attaching device will be placed within the fold formed by the flap and the ilap will` be fastened to the clasp 5. The keyhole-shaped opening may then be caused to engage the collar-button and the wings 9 and l0 inserted between the outer and inner walls of the turn-down collar. This will canse the tie to be retained securely in place and any liability of its becoming displaced will be obviated.

In Fig. 3 I have illustrated the bow form of the tie, which is constructed exactly like the Teck form, so far as my invention is concerned, except that I dispense with the pocket and form a similar one in the bow, as at l2.

It will thus be seen that a tie constructed in accordance with my invention and provided with an attachment such as shown and described by me will` meet all of the requirements of thedifferent kinds of ties so far as the collars are concerned, and it will also be obvious that this invention is equally applicable to different forms of ties-such, for instance, as puff-ties. I therefore do not limit myself to the exact forms illustrated, but reservethe right to Aapply my invention to any form of necktie.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A tie provided with a hinged flap adapted to be fastened and unfastened to the back thereof, in combination with a fastening device designed to be interposed between the iiap and the back of the tie, said fastening device comprising two wings connected by an intermediate. narrow portion, said narrow portion being approximately the length of the width of the flap by which it is secured.

2. A tie provided with a knot and having a iiap arranged on the top of the knot and adapted to fold over the back and be secured thereto, and a removable fastening device designed to be interposed between the knot and the flap, said fastening device comprising two oppositely-disposed wings connected by an intermediate reduced portion for the Io purpose set forth.
