my improved cage 1 of the form preferred for use in collecting and burning combustible rubbish, 820.; and it consists of the circular body portion 2, which is cut and formed from a sheet of wire of any suitable mesh and bent to shape around a former or mandrel, if desired, of the required shape and size, and the strands 3 of the sheet forming the portion 2 preferably running in vertical and horizontal lines at and 5, respectively, and are joined together at their crossings 6 by any suitable unsoldered joint or twist 7, while the horizontal strands 5 of the ends of the wire sheet forming the body portion 2 are secured to each other or to the vertical strands 4. by means of the unsoldered joints or twists 8, as shown in Fig.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,657, dated December 2, 1992- llpplication filed $eptember 5, 1901. Serial No. 74,471. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. ANDERSON, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof. 1

My invention relates to cages, and has special reference towire cages for use in holding combustible rubbish, vegetables, produce, fruit, 61cc.

The object of my invention is to provide such a form of cage as will be cheap and simple in construction and one which will permit combustible rubbish to be collected and burned therein, as well as one which will hold vegetables, fruit, produce, &c., therein and prevent injury to and pilfering therefrom.

My invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts,as hereinafter more speoiiically set forth and described, and particu-' larly pointed out in the claims.

To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use .my improved cage, 1 will describe the same morefully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which--- 7 Figure 1 is a front perspective view of my improved cage. Fig. 2 is a side view of the upper portion of. the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view'showing the manner of forming the joint of the cage. Fig. 4B is alike view showing the manner of connecting the bottom to the cage, and Fig. 5 is a perspective View of another form of my improved cage.

Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each-of the figures of the drawings.

As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, I have shown my improved cage 1 of the form preferred for use in collecting and burning combustible rubbish, 820.; and it consists of the circular body portion 2, which is cut and formed from a sheet of wire of any suitable mesh and bent to shape around a former or mandrel, if desired, of the required shape and size, and the strands 3 of the sheet forming the portion 2 preferably running in vertical and horizontal lines at and 5, respectively, and are joined together at their crossings 6 by any suitable unsoldered joint or twist 7, while the horizontal strands 5 of the ends of the wire sheet forming the body portion 2 are secured to each other or to the vertical strands 4. by means of the unsoldered joints or twists 8, as shown in Fig.

The bottom 9 is preferably formed or cut from a sheet of wire the same mesh and size as the body portion 2, with the strands 10 of the bottom 9 joined together by the unsoldered joints or twists 11 inlike manner and form as the body portion 2, while the strands 10 of the bottom 9 are connected and seen red to the vertical and horizontal Wires 4L and 5 by means of the bent ends 12, and such bottom 9 is secured within the body portion 2 at some'distance above the base 2 thereof in order to form the upper and

13 and 14, respectively.

The lid or top 15 of the cage 1 is preferably formed or cut from a sheet of Wire of the same mesh and size as the body portion 2 and bottom 9, with the strands 16 thereof joined together by the uns'oldered joints or twists in like manner and form as the body portion 2 and bottom 9, and such lid or top 15 is preferably secured to the uppermost horizontal strand 5 of the body portion 2 by means of the hinges 18, which are bent in a single piece of wire 19, which passes through the strands 16 of the top 15 and acts to brace the same. The wire 19 has a hasp 20 bent therein, which extends down and is adapted to be sprung against the strands 3 on the front of the body portion 2 when the lid or top 15 is closed,

while extending beyond the hinges 18 of the wire 19 are the projections 21, which are adapted to be sprung into position for engag ing with the strands 3 on the rear of the body portion 2 when the lid or top 15 is raised for holding said lid 01- top in its open position, as shown in Fig. 2.

In Fig. 5 I have illustrated my improved cage 1 of the form preferred for use in holding vegetables, produce, fruit, the. ,and in this except that in such use the projections 21 on I thewiro 19 are done away with and are unnecessary, as in some cases the lid or top is required to be thrown back.

It Will be evident that the Wire sheets can be bent to the required size for the body portion, bottom, and lid and shipped in bulk, and in this case the lid can be provided with other forms of hinges for doing away with the projections thereon. It will also be evident that the ends of the body portion can be attached in any suitable manner as well as the ends of the bottom to the body portion, while any suitable mesh of woven wire or expanded metal can be used, if desired. It will thus be seen that my improved cage will permit the collection of combustible rubbish and enable the same to be burned therein without injury to the cage in any manner and will enable the same to be burned rapidly by permitting the air to enter under and through the bottom and sides thereof. The rubbish will be prevented from blowing away while being consurned, and the offensive smoke usually incident to the use of such cages will be reduced to a minimum. When used for storing of vegetables, produce, or fruit, it will display the same at all times and from all points and will prevent injury to the contents thereof by dogs or other animals and at the same time will prevent pilfering of the contents by any person.

It will be evident that the body portion of my improved cage can be lengthened and used in a horizontal position for holding large quantities of rubbish, 850., in which case the body portion can have its bottom run lengthwise of the same and such body portion be provided with two lids or covers on each end, so as to permit entrance on either side of the bottom. These and various other modifications in the construction and design of the various parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A cage formed of a wire body portion and having the ends of the blank for forming such body portion secured together by bend- ,ing the ends of the horizontal strands around the outer vertical strands of the body-blank, a wire bottom secured therein at some distance above the bottom or base of the body portion by bending the ends of the wires thereof around strands of said body portion, and a wire lid or top hinged to said body portion.

2. A cage formed of a wire body portion and having the ends of the blank for forming such body portion secured together by bending the ends of the horizontal strands around the outer vertical strandsof the body-blank, a wire bottom secured therein at some distance above the bottom or base of the body portion by bending the ends of the wires thereof around strands of said body portion, a wire lid or top on said body portion, and a wire connected to said lid or top for bracing the same and having bent ends thereon for hinging the lid or top to the body portion.

3. A cage formed of a wire body portion and having a wire bottom secured therein at some distance above the bottom or base of the body portion, a wire lid or top on said body portion, and a wire connected to said top or covering for bracing the same, said brace-wire having bent ends thereon for hinging the lid or top to the body portion, and a hasp thereon adapted to be sprung against the body portion for holding said lid or top in place.

4. A cage formed of a wire body portion and having the ends of the blank for forming such body portion secured together by bending the ends of the horizontal strands around the outer vertical strands of the body-blank, a wire bottom secured therein at some distance above the bottom or base of the body portion by bending the ends of the wires thereof around strands of said body portion, a wire lid or top on said body portion, and a wire connected to said lid or top for bracing the same, said brace-Wire having bent portions thereon for hinging the lid or top of the body portion and projections beyond said bent portions for engaging with the body portion to hold said lid or top in its raised position.
