SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Eatent No. 705,159, dated July 22, 1902.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LUCY A. SUTHERLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hooks and Eyes; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to hooks and eyes, and particularly comprises a hook and eye and improved means for attaching same to the garment or material to be fastened.

The object of the invention is to provide hooks and eyes with an improved safety-pin attachment, whereby they may be readily attached to and detached from garments.

A further object is to form a hook o1 eye and the attaching-pin of a single piece of wire.

The invention is illustrated in the acc0mpanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the hook and eye hooked together. Fig. 2 is a side View in perspective thereof.

Referring particularly to the drawings, the hook and its attaching-pin are formed of a single piece of wire, the pin being in a plane below the hook portion. The shank of the hook consists of two parallel side portions 6 and 7 and an intermediate portion 8, formed by a return-bend at the rear end of the por tion 6. The forward ends of the side por tions are joined together and are bent up and back to form the hook proper, 9. The inter mediate portion 8 is bent up at its forward end to form a hump or tongue 10 and thence is bent downwardly, as at 11, below the plane of the shank and rear wardly to form the pin 12, which is parallel with the shank, but in a lower plane. The parallel reaches and the bends connecting the same give the pin the requisite elasticity to nor mally retain it in engagement with the catch now to be described.

The rear end of the side portion '7 is bent downwardly, as at 13, at substantially a right angle to the plane of the shank and thence laterally and upwardly to form a safety catch 14 for the point of the pin. The eye is similarly formed, except that the forward ends of the connected side portions 6 and '7 are spread laterally to form a loop or eye proper, 9. The intermediate portion 8 is bent downwardly at its forward end, as at 11, and then rearwardly to form the pin 12. The side portion 7 is bent, as at 13 and 14., to form the safety-catch in the same manner as the hook above described.

The hook and the eye are attached to the cloth of a garment by the pins in the same manner as an ordinary safety-pin and can thus be located so as to bring the edges of the cloth together properly. They can be readily changed from one garment to another and will not easily become accidentally detached from the garment nor from each other.

When the pin extends longitudinally of the shank--that is, in the same direction as the strainit is believed to give greater strength and hold than if the pin were entended laterally, across the direction of the strain.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is

1. An eye comprising parallel side bars joined at their front ends and formed into a loop, an intermediate bar connected to the rear end of one of said bars, said intermediate bar being parallel to and in the same plane as said side bars and bent downwardly at its front end to form an attaching-pin in a lower parallel plane, the other side bar being bent at its rear end to form a safety-catch for the end of the pin.

2. A hook comprising parallel side bars joined at their front ends and bent upwardly to form a bill, an intermediate bar connected to the rear end of one of said bars, said intermediate bar being parallel to and in the same plane as said side bars, and bent downwardly at its front end to form an attaching-pin in a lower parallel plane, the other side bar being bent at its rear end to form a safety-catch for the end of the pin.
