NECKTIE- HOLDER.
SEEGIFICATION forming; part of Letters Patent N o. 691 ,543, dated January 21, 1902. Application filed October 25, 1901. Serial No. 79,949. m model.)
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ZALAL GUZIK, a citizen of the United States,-and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Necktie-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for holding four-in-hand neckties, in
' connection with a button and turn-down collar; and an object is to provide a simple ,device by means of which the tie will be suitably held without passing it around the collar; and a further object is to provide a clip of novel construction serving not only as a convenient attachment between the tie-shield and the collar-button, b'ut also-to strengthen the central portion of the shield, where it is most liable to break.
I will describe a necktie-holder embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming'a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front view of a necktie-holder embodying my invention and showing the same as attached to a shield. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof with the shield in section, and Fig. 3 is a rear view.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a shield of the ordinary construction that is, usually consisting of an interior portion of pasteboard or the like and a cover of textile 1naterial-this shield being designed to engage underneath a turn down collar. Attached to the'front of the shield is the necktie-holder member comprising a ring or loop 2, through which the necktie is designed to pass, as indicated in Fig. 2. This loop 2 is formed of a sheet of metal, the back portion 3 of which extends downward below the loop, and this back portion has upwardly-extended ears 4:, provided with openings through which fastening devices may pass to secure it to the shield. This device is conveniently secured together at its meeting edges by providing said edges with sockets 5, the sockets of one side interlocking with the sockets of the other side, and a wire 6 is passed through said sockets. This manner of connecting the edges of the plate obviates soldering, and therefore renders the article cheap to manufacture. The wire 6, ifdesired, may be extended downward and pointed to engage in a tie to prevent any possible upward movement thereof; but it is to be understood that this pin portion may be omitted without departing from the spirit of my invention.
On the rear side of the shield is a clip for engaging with a collar-button. This clip consists of a single length of wire bent to form a hook portion 7 for passing through an opening in the shield, as indicated in Fig. 2, and it also has outwardly-extended shoulders 8 for engaging against the rear side of the shield and preventing the said hook portion from being forced too far through the shield material. Extended downward from the shoulders 8 are the opposite jaw members 9 10 for engaging with the shank of the button. These jaws 9 10 are somewhat separated at their main portions, but are convergent at the bottom, and from these bottom ends the wire of the jaw 9 is carried laterally, thence upward and across the back of the shield, as indicated at 11, and the endis passed through the shield and through the opening in one of the ears 4 and then bent over. The jaw 10 is continued in a similar mannerthat is, it is carried laterally, then upward and across, as at 12, and passed through the shield and through the opening in the opposite ear 4. By crossing the parts 11 and 12, as indicated, the shield is materially strengthened and prevented from breaking at its central portion. The jaw portions, it will be noted, are spaced somewhat from the back of the shield-that is, the parts extending directly from the shoulders 8 are carried out in a substantially horizontal manner, as indicated at 13, while the upper portions of the lower bends are carried back to the shield in asubstantially horizontal line, as indicated at 14.
In placing the clip over a button the shank is to be passed between the lower ends and into the wider portion between the jaws, and as the space between the lower ends of the jaws is considerably less than the diameter of the shank it is obvious that the device will not becomeaccidentallydetached; butit may be readily removed by pressure, as the jaws will spring outward.
In some instances the holder portion comprising the loop may be omittedthat is, when a bow or the like is attached directly to the shield.
The crossing of the parts 11 and 12 will not only'strengthen the shield, as stated, but will serve to hold the jaws in proper relation to each other and prevent accidental detachment from a button.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In connection with a necktie-shield, a clip for engaging with a button and consisting of a single length of wire formed with a hook portion to pass into the shield, lateral shoulders at the upper portion for engaging against the rear side of the shield, the downwardlyextended jaws and the crossed portions for engaging against the rear side of the shield, substantially as specified.
2. In connection with a necktie-shield, a button-engaging clip consisting of a single length of wire bent to form jaw portions, and
a portion for fastening the same at the upper end to the shield, the ends of the jaw portions being bent out laterally in opposite directions, thence forward and thence across the back of the shield and through the shield, substantially as specified.
3. A necktie-holder, comprising a shield, a button-engaging clip on the rear side of said shield, and a metal loop on the front of the shield, the said loop being secured in place by the said clip, substantially as specified.
4. The combination with a necktie-shield, of a necktie-holding device consisting of a plate bent to form a loop and having its edges provided with socket members, the socket members of one edge interlocking with the socket members of the other edge, a fasteningwire passing through said sockets and a button-engaging device securing said holding device to the shield, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ZALAL GUZIK.
