To all whom, it #tay concern,.-
Be it known that I, PETER BRoADBooKs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Batavia, county of Genesee, and State of New York, have invented a certain -new and useful Improvementin Pliers, of which the following is a specification'.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in pliers, and'hasgfor its object to construct pliers in which the handles arepivl oted together in such a way as to give to the jaws a compound leverage, which will make them powerful and at Vthe same time simple in their operation. A further yobject of my invention is to construct the same of few parts and have such parts so that they are readily assembled, so that the pliers will be inexpensive to make, convenient in operation, and strong in all their parts.
With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combi-- nation of elements'hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention` appertains may understand how to make and usethe same, the construetion and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of my pliers, showing side wirecutters attached to the jaws. In carrying out my invention as here einbodied, A represents the handles of the pliers, which are pivoted together at the point B.
C C are the jaws, which are pivoted together by the pivot D.
E represents plates which are arranged in pairs upon each side of the handles and jaws. Theseplates cross each otherupon each side of the pliers and/are pivoted together upon the pivot D. The forward end of one ofthe plates, upon each side, is pivoted to the jaws C at the points E', and the heel end of one of the plates, upon each side of the handles, is pivoted to Fig.v .tis a sec- Fig. 5 is a side -other two to the vother handle and said plates being thus pivoted together `upon the same pivot as the jaws and then two of Vthe plates, one upon Aeach side, being connected to the jaws at 'a point betweenthe pivot D and the outer end oi"l thejaws will cause 'a compoundleverage toAbe employedlwhen the handles A are open oriclosed. This will give great power to the ja'wswith a very simple' construction.
G represents cutter-plates, which may be formed with or secured to the jaws C (in the drawings they are shown as formed separate from the jaws) and are riveted, one to each of the jaws, by the rivets H and also by the pivots or-rivets E. The cutting-plates meet at the'line'I and are milled or groundto a knifeedge for the purpose 'otcutting wire, &c. These cutting-plates instead of being riveted to the jaws could be formed solid with one set of the side plates E; butthe more preferable to replace the samewhen the cutting edges need sharpening or vif the plates themselves should be damaged in any way.
In Fig. 5 I have shown how the jaws C could beremoved and the end cutters J substituted inthe placefthereof.
The advantages `of my inventionare that by employing this ffo'rm of construction great ,power can. be employed w'ithan instrument which vis comparatively simple andf'cheap to construct and theparts assembledfin such a way that if any part should becomedamaged it can be readily interchangedfoi' anew one,
and a further advantage of my device is that the jaws being pivoted independent of the handles any form of jaws can be readily substituted without removing anyparts except the jaws themselves.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful isl. In pliers, a pair of handles pivoted together, a pair of jaws pivoted together indeyform would be to have them separate, so as pendent of said handles, plates arranged in pairs upon each side of the handles and jaws, said plates crossing one another and being pivoted together upon the same pivot as the jaws, one end of said plates upon each side being connected to the jaws, the heel end of the plates upon each side being connected to the handle, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
2. In pliers, a pair of handles pivoted together, a pair of jaws pivoted together at their heel ends independent of the handles, a pair of plates, one upon each side of the jaws and handles, one end of said plates being pivoted to one of the jaws, the other end of said plates being pivoted to one of the handles, a second pair of plates, one upon each side of the jaws and handles, said second pair of plates adapted to cross the first-named pair of plates and be pivoted at one end to the other jaw and at their other end tothe other handle, said plates being all pivoted together upon the same pivot as the jaws, cutting plates secured to or `formed with said side plates, the cutting edges adapted to meet and lie parallel with one another when the jaws are closed, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
3. In combination, in pliers, a pair of handles A pivoted together, a pair of jaws C pivoted together independent of the handles,
cross-plates E arranged in pairs upon each side of thejaws and handles and pivoted upon the same pivot as the jaws, two of said plates, one upon each side of the jaws being pivoted at one end to one of the jaws at a point between the pivotal point of the jaws and the end of the same, the other end ofthe same plates being pivoted to one of the handles at a point intermediate of the pivotal point of said handles and their ends, the other two plates, one upon each side of the jaws, being pivoted at one of their ends to the other jaws at a point intermediate between the pivotal point of the jaws and the end of the same, and the other end of the same plates being pivoted to the other handle at a point intermediate of the pivotal point of the handles and their ends, wire-cutters secured to or formed with one side of the jaws having cutting edges adapted to meet and lie parallel with one another when the pliers are closed, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
