Be it known that I, JOHN G. GABEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holton, in the county of Jackson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Packing Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others-skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same.

This invention relates to that class of machines or devices comprising means by which cigars may be reduced in bulk by compression and transferred when so reduced to the boxes in which it is customary to pack them.

To this end the invention contemplates an improved cigar-packing machine or device of a simple and practical construction, while at the same time involving a wide range of adjustment, whereby the said machine is adapted for packing cigars for dilferent sizes of cigar-boxes, as well as having an adjustment to suit the sizes of the cigars to be packed for a particular size of cigar-box.

With these and many other objects in View, which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood,the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated,and claimed. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigar-packing machine embodying the improvements contemplated by the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the machine, indicating by dotted lines one means of holding the cigars in their packed or compressed condition for convenient transferring of the same to the cigar-box. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. at is a detail in perspective of the open box-body with the follower slide and adjustable headblock removed. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the slide. Fig. 0 is a similar view of the headblock.

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in each of the views of the drawings.

In carrying out the invention there is employed an open box-body 1 of a general rectan gula'r form and open at the top, front side,

and one end, said box-body essentially comprising a main bottom board 2, a longitudinally-arranged back 8, arising from the rear edge of the said bottom board, and a stationaryorfixed end piece 4, arranged transversely of the bottom board 2, contiguous to one end thereof, and suitably secured at one edge to the back 3 and suitably braced at its front edge to the main bottom board by means of the brace 5. These details might, however, be changed, as it is only essential to construct the box-body of the main bottom board 2, the longitudinal back 3, and the fixed end piece 4. The lower edge of the fixed end piece 4 preferably terminates short of the upper side of the bottom board 2, as at 5, to loosely receive and guide the follower-slide 6, slidably mounted fiat upon the main bottom board 2 and provided at one end with an upright follower-head 7, opposing the fixed end piece 4 ofthe box-body, and therefore constituting, in effect, a movable end or head for the box to provide for placing the proper pressure upon the cigars in the packing operation.

To provide for the necessary movement and adjustment of the follower-slide, there is as sociated with the same adjusting means carried by an adjustable head-block 8. This headblock is arranged transversely within the open end of the box-body at one side of the plane of the follower-head 7and is preferably provided at its base with the guide-opening 9, slidably receiving a retaining-arm 10, projecting from one end of the follower-slide and serving to hold such end from lateral movement or displacement. To secure a wide range of adjustment for the head-block 8, the same is adjustable longitudinally of the box-body and is held fast in any set or adjusted position by the fastening devices 11 and 12, located, respectively, at the back and bottom of the boxbody. The back fastening device 11 simply consists of a clampiugscrew extending through the slot 13, formed in the back 3 of the box-body, while the bottom fastening device 12 consists of a clamping-bolt, whose head let is seated flush within the longitudinal channel 15, formed in the bottom of the boX Within thevertical plane of the longitudinal slot 16, through which the bolt extends. The said bolt passes upwardly through the base portion of the head-block and receives thereon a binding-nut 17.

The head-block 8 is provided with a horizontal recess 18, in which is mounted on a vertical pivot 19 a horizontally-arranged pressure-cam 20, having a tangentially-disposed handle 21 for manipulating the same. The said head-block is also provided with an unthreaded screw-opening 22, loosely receiving the setting-screw 23, having a swiveled connection 24 at its inner end with the followerslide and carrying thereon between said slide and the adjustable head-bl0ck a loose nut 25.

Various means may be resorted to for holding the cigars in their packed or compressed condition for transferral to the cigar-box; but a simple expedient is shown in the drawings and consists of the employment of the tape T, placed within the packing-box prior to the introduction of the cigars therein. Assuming the tape in position and the adjustable head-block set where desired, the loose nut 25 is run against the head-block and held stationary by the finger of one hand, while the setting-screw 23 is manipulated with the other hand to provide for adjusting the follower-slide until the bottom row of cigars, consisting of the predetermined number, shall loosely fill the interval between the fixed end piece 4 and the follower-head 7. Then the remaining rows of cigars are placed within the packing-box and the pressure-cam manipulated to compress or pack the same in the desired compass, it being noted that the loose nut 25 and the unthreaded opening 22 permit of the movement of the followerhead under the influence of the pressurecam. After the cigars have been suitably packed or compressed the ends of the tape are brought together over the top of the bundle and the same transferred to the cigar-box. It will be obvious that the construction as described adapts the machine for different thicknesses of cigars as well as for packing for different sizes of boxes.

Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is

1. In a cigar-packing machine, an open box, a follower-slide arranged within the box, an adjustable head-block mounted within one end of the box, a setting-screw carried by the head-block and cooperating with said slide, and a pressure-cam also carried by the headblock and cooperating with said slide.

2. In a cigar-packing machine, the boxbody having a fixed end piece and provided with a slide-opening, a follower-slide working through said opening and having a head and a retaining-arm, an adjustable headblock mounted within the open end of the box, said head-block having a guide-opening for said retaining-arm, separate fastening devices adjustably connecting the head-block with the back and bottom of the box, and a setting-screw and a pressure device both supported by said head-block.

8. In a cigar-packing machine, an open box, a follower-slide arranged within the box, a head-block arranged within one end of the box, a setting-screw loosely extending through the head-block and swiveled to the followerslide, a loose nut arranged on the screw, and a pivotal pressure-cam supported by the headblock.
