To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN TYLER CUTTING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Tobacco-Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The purpose of the invention is to provide a box especially adapted for holding smoking-tobacco and to so construct the box that it may be conveniently carried in the pocket and so that tobacco may be poured therefrom directly into the bowl of a pipe Without waste.

A further purpose of the invention is to construct a lid which will lock itself to the box, no catch being needed, and which can be conveniently removed from engagement with the body of the box when desirable.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts,as will be hereinafter fully set forth,and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a vertical section through the improved box, the cover being closed thereon. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the box, parts being broken away, the cover being also closed thereon. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the improved cover; and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section through the upper portion of the box and a transverse section through the cover, the cover being shown as disconnected from the box.

The box may be constructed of any suitable material, tin being usually employed, and the said box consists of a body A, which in cross-section presents an elongated oval. One end of the bodyAis closed bya cap or head B. This cap or head consists of a body 10, dished or struck inward, which body fits tightly to the inner face of the body of the box, and the body of the cap or head B is provided with a marginal flange 11, which extends over the edge of said body, as is shown best in Fig. 1. In connection with the bodyA a cap or cover 0 is employed to close the opposite end of said body of the box. This cap or cover consists of a dished body 12, adapted to extend down within the body-section A of the box, and the dished body of the cover 0 is provided with a marginal flange 13 at its upper edge, and its sides 14 taper downward. The area of the bottom portion of the cover Ocorresponds to the normal area of the mouth of the body A of the box which the cover is adapted to close, and when the cover 0 is forced down in the body of the box the said box-body is expanded outward, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the cover is thus held in firm engagement with the box-body without the aid of catches of any description. The expansion of the mouth of the box-body when the cover is placed therein is clearly shown at 15 in Figs. 1 and 2. By reason of the elongated oval shape of the body of the box when the cover 0 is removed the tobacco may be poured from the body of the box directly into the bowl of a pipe without waste, since the contracted edge sections of the box at the mouth form chutes which direct the tobacco to the bowl. The shape of the body of the boxA also enables the box to be carried conveniently in the pocket without proving objectionable.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent -1. As a new article of manufacture, a tobacco-box comprising a body oval in shape in cross-section and having one end permanently closed, the edges of the walls at the mouth of the box being normallyin the plane with the sides of the box, and a cover having a dish-shaped body and a marginal flange, the body of the cover being adapted to enter the body of the box and to expand the same, so that the cover will be securely held in position, by the elasticity of the body of the box, as set forth.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a tobacco-box, consisting of a body-section which presents in crosssection an elongated oval, the edges of the walls at the mouth of the box being normally in the plane with the sides of the box, a cap having a dished body fitting in and permanently closing one end of the said body, and a cover for the opposite end of the body, which cover consists of a dished body portion, a marginal flange at the upper edge of the said dished body portion, the sides of the body portion of the cover being inclined inward and downward, the bottom area of the said cover corresponding to the normal area of the box-body at the end which is adapted to receive the cover, whereby when the cover is forced into the box-body the mouth portion of said box-body is expanded and the cover securely held therein by the elasticity of the box-body, as and for the purpose set 10 forth.
