A SPECIFICATION forming* part f Letters Patent N0. 680,599, dated August 13, 1901.
Application ledAngust 8, 1900. Serial No. 26,813. (No model.)
T0 all whom/'zit may oon/cern:
Be it known that We, HARVEY P. JONES and HARRY S. JONES, citizens of theUnited States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Punches, of which the following is a specification.
Ourinvention relates particularly to handoperated punches, and our primary object is 1o to provide a portable machine of this character which is both light and strong.
Our improved machine is particularly adapted for use in punching the binding-perforations for ledger-leaves of the loose-leaf type, and it may be remarked that the machine Was designed, primarily, to meet the demand for a suitable punch Which could be taken from office to office and used in perforating leaves Where perforation or reperzo foration might be required, as by a change in system.
` In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a machine embodying our improvements; Fig. 2, avertical section through a combined guide and female die, the section being taken as indicated in Fig. 3; Fig. 3, a horizontal section of the same, taken as indicated in Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a view of the detached male die; Fig. 5, a section of the same at line 3o 5 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6, a section at line 6 of Fig.
l; Fig. 7, a view of the machine in front elevation; and Fig. S, an end view of the eccentric-shaft employed.
A represents a platform comprising hinged sections A and A2; B, a guide or gage movably secured thereon by bolts a' passing Y through said sections and through slots d on the gage and equipped with Winged nuts a2; C, a cast-metal die support or bed; D, an ad- 4o justably-supported combined die and guide blocks; D and D2, integral and removable retaining-strips, respectively, for securing the blocks D to the base C; E, upright guides rising from the base C; F,a cross-head moving on said guides; F', an eccentric-shaft journaled in the upper ends of said guides; F2, an operating-handle for said shaft; F2, links journaled on eccentrics b and supporting the cross-head, and F4 adjustable male dies or 5o punches carried by said cross-head.
The platform-section A comprises a board c and cross-pieces or ribs c' on the lower surface thereof. The section A2 comprises a narrowed board c2 and cross-pieces c3. The abutting ends of each set of cross-pieces c c3 55 are connected by a hinge c4. The pieces c3 project beyond the front edge of the board c2 and are recessed to receive and support the part C. The part C is in turn recessed at its rear upper corner to receive the front edge of '6o the board c2. The top surface of the platform is thus made flush with the top surface of the strip or shoulder D'. The base C is provided With a longitudinal slot d2, through which the cuttings from the dies drop.
The combined guide and die blocks D are provided with inclined surfaces d d', which are engaged by overhanging inclined surfaces Of the retaining-strips D and D2. Each block has an upper guide portionfand aloWer 7o die portion f', separated from the upper portion by a horizontal leaf-receiving slot f2 in the front portion of the block. A vertical guide-perforation f3 and die-perforation f4 intersect the slot f2, and these perforations are in turn int-ersected by a vertical slot f5, extending from the rear of the block. A hardened-steel facing or shearing plate f6 is detachably secured to the upper surface proper of the die portion of the block by screws f7. So
Each male die comprises a cylindrical stem g, a retaining-flange g', a reduced cutting end g2, and a separately-formed Wing g3, socketed in a vertical slot, as shown. The Wing g2 moves in the slot f5 and serves to cut a slot 85 leading from the edge of the paper to the perforation.
Fig. 6 shows the cross-head F provided with a longitudinally-disposed die-retainer h, having a horizontal flange 7L', between which go and the lower surface of the cross-head fit the anges g' of the adjustable male dies. In operation the male dies never leave their guides, so that there is no opportunity for binding, with consequent danger of breakage. 9 5
It will be readily understood that the dieblocks With the male dies in place in their guides can be disposed as desired along the retaining-strips D' D2, after which they are firmly clamped in place by the member D2. loo The leaf to be punched is placed With its top or bottom edge along the gage B and its binding-margin extending through the slotf2. The location of the binding-perforations can of course be regulated by adjustment of the dies.
The machine is commonly taken from office to ofiice in a casing or chest provided with suitable handles. The portability is greatly facilitated by making the platform capable of folding. When desired, certain of the bolts securing the gage B may be removed, and the gage can then be swung to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. This permits the section A' to be swung beneath the section A2. Blocks 7c, corresponding to the hinge thickness, serve to prevent injury to the hinges when the parts are folded. The cross-head is shown depressed in the drawings. By moving the handle F2 to a vertical position it is evident that the cross-head will be raised. The ends of the slots f2 act as stops or gages for the binding edge of the leaf, as is evident.
The blocks D may be of cast-iron, excepting the shearing-plates f6.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a portable punching-machine, the combination of a platform comprising downwardly-swinging hinged sections, a female die connected with one of said sections, a reciprocating male die coacting therewith, and a movable guide or gage secured to the upper surface of said platform and extending across the junction of said sections, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a punching-machine having a suitable base provided with inclined retainingshoulders and having also a plurality of adj ustably-supported reciprocating male dies and a suitable platform, a plurality of adjustably supported separate integrally formed combined guide and female die receiving said male die and provided with upwardly-convergent surfaces engaged by said retainingshoulders, each combined guide and die being provided with a horizontal recess, the lower wall of which is flush with the upper surface of said platform, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a punching-1nachine,the combination of a Wooden platform comprising two downwardly-swinging sections, one of said sections being cut away at its upper front portion, a metallic die-block base supported on the recessed portion of the front section and having the surface ush with the top surface of the platform and provided also with upwardly-convergent retaining-shoulders, an integrally-formed combined guide and female die adjustably supported by said base and provided with upwardly-convergent surfaces engaged by said retaining-shoulders and having a horizontal slot in its rear portion, the lower wall whereof is iiush With the adjacent surface of said base, and a reciprocating male die supported from said base and received by said combined guide and die, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
