TO all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, EDWIN L. BOWRING and FRANKLIN BARNHART, citizens of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Wardrobe and Bedstead; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to improvements in acombined bed and wardrobe; and its objects are to provide a device that will economize space, one in which the headboard of a bedstead as usually made is utilized as a front for the wardrobe, to provide a cheap and convenient structure, and to provide the device with certain new and useful features hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Our device consists, essentially, in a suitable case or box having an open front and adapted to serve as a wardrobe or other receptacle for clothing, a bedstead having a headboard of the usual construction and of suitable dimensions to close the front of the case when the case is placed behind the headboard, and means for slidably connecting the case and bedstead, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which-'- p Figure 1 is a perspective of a device embodying our invention; Fig. 2, a detail show ing a vertical section of the case and headboard; Figs. 8 and 4, enlarged details of the means for slidably connecting the case and bedstead,'and Fig. 5 a detail of one of the strips used for said connecting means.

A represents the headboard of an ordinary bedstead.

B represents a case adapted to serve as a Wardrobe and having an open front. Said case is also provided with a linen-chest C at the bottom and is mounted on casters or rolls D. The case is slidably connected near the top and bottom to the rear of the headboard A, as at E E, by means of suitable slidablyinterlocking strips F and F, preferably consisting of strips of sheet metal folded longi tudinally, as shown in Fig. 5, being folded U -shaped'in cross-section,with one part wider and perforated to receive screws to secure the strip to the bed or case. strips F is attached to the headboard near the top and in the plane of the top of the case, and another strip F is attached to the top of the case in reverse position, so that the strips will slidably interlock, as shown in Fig. 3.

One of; these Another strip F is attached to the legs A of the headboard and parallel to the upper strip F, and another strip F is attached to the case to slidably interlock with the strip F, attached to the legs A. These strips F and F are so adjusted that they have vertical clearance, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, whereby any slight unevenness in the surface traversed by the rolls D D Will not cause the strips to bind. The rolls or casters D support the case and permit it to move freely in either direction from behind the headboard. The bedstead is also mounted on casters, whereby the bedstead may be moved from the front of the wardrobe or the wardrobe moved from behind the'bedstead.

When the case is behind the headboard, the latter forms a front for the case and closes the same. The linen-chest 0 extends below the headboard, and the front of the linen-chest overlaps the lower edge of the headboard, thus serving to close the space below the headboard, which would otherwise be open.

Another important advantage of the device is that the wardrobe shown may be attached to any ordinary bedstead as usually and means for slidably connecting the case too and headboard, whereby each may be moved relative to the other, substantially as described.

The combination of a case having an open front and adapted to serve as a wardrobe, a bedstead having a headboard adapted to close the front of the case, and strips of sheet metal folded longitudinally and attached to the case and bedstead, and having slidably-interlocking portions, substantially as described.

3. The combination of a bedstead having a headboard of the usual construction as shown, a case adapted to serve as a wardrobe and having a linen-chest extending above the lower edge of the headboard, and means for slidably connecting the bedstead and case, substantially as described.

4. The combination of a case having an open front, a bedstead having a headboard adapted to close the upper part of the front of the ease, rolls supporting the case, casters supporting the bedstead and interlocking slides on the bedstead and case, whereby the bedstead and case are each movable relative to the other, substantially as described.

5. The combination of a case having an open front, a bedstead having a headboard adapted to close the front of the case, rolls supporting the case, strips of sheet metal folded longitudinally and attached to the case and bedstead and having slidably-interlocking portions, substantially as described.

6. The combination of a case having an open front, a bedstead having a headboard adapted to close the front of the case, rolls supporting the case, and interlocking strips of sheet metal folded longitudinally and having vertical clearance, substantially as described.

7. The combination of a case having an open front and a linen-chest, a bedstead having a headboard adapted to close the front of the case and engage the upper part of the front of the linen-chest, rolls supporting the case, and interlocking strips of sheet metal folded longitudinally and having a vertical clearance, substantially as described.
