Description

' E. A. HARVEY.
PENCIL SHARPENER GUIDE.
(Application filed Feb. 20, 1901.)
No. 684,933. Patented Oct. 22, I90I.
(No'ModeL) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EDMUND ALBAN HARVEY, OF WILMINGTON, DELAYVARE.
PENCIL-SHARPENER GUIDE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 684,933, dated October 22, 1901.
Application filed February 20, 1901. Serial No. 48.093. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND ALBAN HAR- VEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of Newcastle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil- Sharpener Guides, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for holding pencils while the latter are being sharpened; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which will hold a pencil at a proper angle and guide the knife used in sharpening the same.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of myimprovement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved penoil-holder; Fig. 2, a side View thereof; Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2, showing one of the sides removed; Fig. 4, an end view looking in the direction of the arrow (1 and Fig. 5 a similar view of the opposite end of the holder.
In the practice of my invention I provide a pencil-holder comprising two side plates 6, which are preferably provided at the top thereof with flanges 6 and these plates are separated at one end by a block 7, to which is secured a disk 8, of rubber, leather, or any other suitable material, adapted to turn on its support, and the side plates 6 are secured together by screws or similar devices 9, passed I through the said sides and through the block 7. Placed in the opposite end of the holder or between the sides thereof at the opposite end is a holder proper, which consists of two similar parts 11, which are rectangular in cross-section and inthe adjacent surfaces of which is formed a cylindrical passage 12, onehalf of which is formed in each member 11, and the said members 11 of the pencil-holder proper are preferably divided diagonally from one end to the other, as clearly shown at 13. The holder proper or the separate sides thereof are held in place by pivoted screws or similar devices 14, passed through the ends of the plates 6 of the body of the holder, and each of the sides 6 of the body of the holder is provided with a vertically-arranged segmental slot 15, and, passed therethrough and into the separate sides or members of the holder proper is a screw or similar device 16, and by means of this construction the inner end of the holder proper may be vertically adjusted between the said plate 6 of the body of the holder.
In practice a pencil to be sharpened is passed through the holder proper, as indicated in dotted lines at 17, and the end thereof butts against the plate or disk 8, and a knife-blade is passed over the top surface of the holder in the direction of the arrow 12, as shown in Fig. 3, and the end of the pencil may thus be clearly, finely, and symmetrically sharpened, and by adjusting the inner end of the holder proper the pencil may be given a long or short point, as will be readily understood, and this device may be used for sharpening crayon pencils or similar articles, as well as theordinary lead-pencil.
My invention is not limited to the exact construction herein shown and described, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein as fairly come withinthe scope of the invention. 7
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pencil-sharpener guide, comprising a body portion having a central longitudinal space, and a pencil-holder secured in one end thereof and through which the pencil is adapted to be inserted, the inner end of said holder being higher than the other end, and Vertically adjustable, substantially as shown and described.
2. A pencil-sharpener guide comprising a body portion having an open longitudinal space at the top and bottom, a pencil-holder secured in one end thereof and through which the pencil is adapted to be inserted one end of said holder being higher than the other, and the body portion of the guide being provided at the end thereof adjacent to the higher end of the holder with a disk or plate secured thereto,subst-antially as shown and described.
3. A pencil-sharpener guide comprising a body portion having an open longitudinal space at the top and bottom, a pencil-holder secured in one end thereof and through which the pencil is adapted to be inserted, one end In testimony that I claim the foregoing as I0 of said holder being higher than the other, my invention Ihave signed my name, in presand the body portion of the guide being proence of the subscribing witnesses, this 16th vided at one eiidd therelgfagjaccent tlozhe highe' day of February, 1901.
end of the ho er wit a is or p a e secure 7 thereto, the higher end of the holder being EDMUND ALIAN HAhVEY' also vertically adjustable, and said disk or Witnesses:
plate being turnably mounted on its support, IIUXLEY HARVEY,
substantially as shown and described. CHARLES H. SCOTT.
