SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 684,669, dated ()etober 15, 1901.

To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs EDWIN BLUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for the Manufacture of Glassware, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in machines for the manufacture of glassware, and pertains to providing means for delivering a predetermined quantity of molten glass to the forming mechanism at each charge thereof, all of which will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a machine embodying my invention, partly shown in vertical section, the parts being shown in a charging position. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, being shown partly in section and in a pressing position. Fig. 3 is a top sectional plan on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a detail View, partly in section, of the bottom for the weighing-receptacle. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the latch for locking together the two parts of the bottom of the weighing-receptacle.
Referring now to the drawings, A is a supporting-table of any desired form, from which projects a vertical standard 1. Vertically movable in relation to this standard in suit able bearings is a plunger-rod 15, carrying a suitable presser-head of any desired form and a plunger 14 at its lower end. The plunger is movable vertically through the medium of a counterweighted lever 16 and a link 17, having its ends connected, respectively, with the said plunger-rod and lever.
The mold 13 may be of any desired form, and the plunger or coacting member 1a is adapted to coact therewith for forming the article or for forming ablank to be afterward finished.
Located above the mold 13 is a weighingreceptacle 4., which is rigid with a suitable trunnion 9, having vertical journals in suitable supports 0t, projecting from the lower end of the standard 1. By means of this trunnion connection the weighing-receptacle is laterally movable in respect to the mold for the purpose of permitting the coacting member or plunger 14 entering the mold 13.
The bottom 5 of the Weighing-receptacle i is made in two parts, as illustrated in Fig. 4, and adapted to swing horizontally for the purpose of opening the bottom of the weighingreceptacle to permit the weighed glass to drop into the mold therebelow. The two parts of the bottom are locked together through the medium of alatch b,adapted to engage the handles thereof. The inner end of the bottom 5 is pivoted at the point 8, and a scalebeam 10, carrying a poise or weight 12, is in termediately pivoted at the point e and has its inner end cl in engagement with the bottom 5 at a point beween its ends. From this description it Willbe seen that the weight and the scale-beam serve to hold the bottom D in place against the underside of the weighing receptacle for closing it.
Located at the upper end of the weighingreceptacle 4: is a suitable knife 2, which is normally held in contact with the stop 3 through the medium of a spring 6, the said knife being here shown as pivotally supported by means of a suitable pin or rod 7.
In the operation of my invention the gathered glass is dropped into the measuring vessel or receptacle until the bottom 5 moves downward slightly, when the unskilled presser, holding the knife 2 to one side of the upper end of the measuring-receptacle, will release the knife, when it will immediately sever the glass, and the predetermined quan tity of glass is then within the weighing-receptacle. The bottom 5 is then opened, and the weighed glass drops into the mold 13. The weighing mechanism is then turned to one side of the mold and the plunger or coacting member 14 caused to coact with the mold for forming or partially forming the molten glass which has been delivered thereto through the medium of the weighing mechanism.
By means of a mechanism through the me dium of which a predetermined quantity of molten glass can be delivered-:jto the mold I am enabled to materially cheapen the production of the articles made by the machine in that unskilled labor can be employed for the purpose of gathering and pressing in the place of the usual skilled and relatively higherpriced labor required without some means of delivering a predetermined quantity of glass to the mold, and I am also enabled to effect mold.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. A machine for the manufacture of glassware comprising a forming mechanism, and a weighing mechanism constructed and adapted to deliver to the forming mechanism a predetermined quantity of glass.
2. A machine for the manufacture of glassware comprising a mold, a coacting member located in a plane thereabove, and a weighing mechanism located between the mold and its coacting member and constructed to deliver a predetermined quantity of glass to the mold.
3. A machine for the manufacture of glassware comprising a mold,a weighing-receptacle situated thereabove, the weighing-receptacle having a knife for cutting the gathered glass, said receptacle constructed to deliver the cut glass to the mold.
4. A machine for the manufacture of glassware comprising a mold, a weighing member situated thereabove and constructed to de liver its contents to said mold, the Weighing member and mold being relatively laterally movable.
5. A machine for the manufacture of glassware, comprising a mold, a Weighing-receptacle situated thereabove and adapted to deliver its contents to said mold, and a glasscutting member at the upper end of the Weighing-receptacle.
6. A machine for the manufacture of glassware, comprising a mold, and a vertically and laterally movable weighing member located above saidv mold, and adapted to deliver its contents to said mold.
7. A machine for the manufacture of glassware comprising a mold, a weighing vessel located above said mold, said weighing-receptacle having a laterally and vertically movable bottom.
8. A machine for the manufacture of glassware comprising a mold, a receptacle located above the mold, the receptacle having a lat orally and vertically movable bottom and a weighing means operatively connected with said bottom to control its vertical movement.
