UNITED STATES PATENT EEIcE.
CHARLES H. FOSTER, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
BED OR COUCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 673,945, dated May 14, 1901. Application filed February 9, 1901. Serial No. 46,597. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. Fosrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented a certain new and useful Bed or Couch, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
In beds or couches as heretofore constructed it has been usual to support the spring bedbottom on slats carried by the side rails of the bed or couch. It is the object of my invention to dispense with the use of slats for supporting the spring bed-bottom.
My invention consists in various novel features and details of construction, all of which are described in the following specification and pointed out in the claim afiixed hereto.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a bed or couch made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is an isometric projection of one of the angular corner-pieces. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through one corner of the bed or couch, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 2.
Like marks of reference refer to similar parts in the several views of the drawings.
Each of the angular corner-pieces consists of two wings 10, arranged at right angles to each other and preferably formed integral. The wings 10 are provided with screw-holes 11 for securing the side and end rails of the bed to said wings. Carried by the wings 10 and preferably formed integral therewith is a ledge 12, which supports the spring bedbottom, as will be hereinafter described. The wings 10 are extended below the ledge 12 to form a leg 14:. Carried by the leg 14 is a plate 15, which is preferably formed integral with the said leg 14. Swiveled to the plate 15 is a caster 16 of any usual construction. The angular corner-piece formed by the wings 10 is adapted to receive the spring bed-bottom with interposed side and end rails, as shown in Fig. 2.
Referring to Figs. 2 and 3, 18 is one of the side rails of the bed, and 19 one of the end rails. These side and end rails are preferably mitered together, as shown in Fig. 3, and are secured to the wings 10 by screws passing through the holes 11. rails are supported by theledge 12. Within the side and end rails 18 and 19 is the spring bed-bottom, which consists of side pieces 20, end pieces 21, and a Woven-wire mattress 22, which is secured to the end pieces 21 in the usual manner. The spring bed-bottom is supported by the ledges 12 of the angular cornerpieces.
It will be seen that my construction entirely dispenses with the use of slats, thus greatly simplifying the construction of the bed or couch.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a bed or couch, the combination with angular corner-pieces, of side and end rails secured to said corner-pieces, ledges carried by said corner-pieces and extending below said side and end rails, and a spring bed-bottom within said rails and resting upon said ledges.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. O. H. FOSTER. [L. s]
