MOISTENER FOB GUMMED SUBFACES.
(Application filed Sept. 28, 1900.)
(Np Model.)
Wi?? m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. MURRAY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
MOISTENER FOR GUMMED SURFACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 673,918, dated May 14, 1901. Application filed September 28, 1900. Serial No. 31,378. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. MURRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Moisteners for Gummed Surfaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved device for moistening gummed surfaces.
One object of myinvention is to provide a device with a chamber for the reception of water having a discharge-orice at one end controlled by a valve whereby the flow of water to the sponge or other absorbent material used may be controlled and the desired dampness of the sponge maintained.
A further object of my invention is to provide a sponge-receptacle of such a construction as to allow the device to be held in a horizontal position when in use.
Other features of the invention will be fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a View showing my improved device being applied to the gummed surface of an envelop. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of same. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the valve for controlling the Iiow of water to the sponge.
Similar numerals refer to like and corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In the accompanying drawings, l designates the water-chamber, 2 the valve for controlling the flow of water to the sponge, and 3 the sponge-receptacle.
The water-chamber in this instance is cylindrical in cross-section and is made of glass. At one end the said chamber 1 is provided with a sleeve 4, held thereto by cement or other suitable material and having its exterior surface screw-threaded for the reception of the cap 5 to close the end of the said waterchamber. At the opposite end the said chamber l is provided with a cap 6, having a discharge-orifice 7 therein. The upper surface of the cap 6 is provided with a concavity 8 around the orifice 7 to form a seat for the protuberance 9 when the said orifice is closed. The exterior surface of the said cap 6 is screwthreaded for the reception of the cup-shaped Valve 2, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
The cup-shaped valve 2 is screw-threaded on its interior surface at one end to fit over the cap 6. The said valve is also provided with one or more apertures 10 thereimthrough which the water flows from the chamber 1 to the sponge. `Projecting inwardly from the said valve 2 is a protuberance 9, which lits within the concavity 8 of the cap 6 to control the flow of water from the chamber 1 to the sponge l1. The upper end of the valve 2 is screw-threaded on its exterior surface for the reception of the sponge-receptacle 3.
The sponge-receptacle 3 is provided with an interior screw-thread to fit over the valve 2. The opposite end of the said sponge-receptacle 3 is provided with an angularly-disposed opening through which the sponge 11 projects, whereby the said sponge projects at right angles with respect to the Water-chamber and permits the device to be held in a horizontal position when in use. The said sponge receptacle 3 is also provided with an inwardly-projecting pin 12 to retain the sponge in its proper position.
When it is desired to use the device, the valve 2 is unscrewed sufciently to allow the discharge-orifice 7 to be uncovered, whereby the water will flow from the chamber l, through the orifice '7 and aperture or apertures 10, to the sponge.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a moistener for gummed surfaces, the combination of a water-chamber; a sleeve fitted around one end vthereof and having its exterior surface screw-threaded; a cap screwthreaded upon said sleeve to close one end of the water-chamber; a cap on the opposite end of the said chamber provided with a dischargeorifice, and having its exterior surface screwthreaded; a cup-shaped valve screw-threaded upon said cap and having one or more apertures therein; a sponge receptacle Screwthreaded upon said valve; a pin projecting inwardly from the said receptacle to retain the said sponge therein; and a sponge projecting from the said receptacle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. MURRAY.
