DUPLEX STOCKlNG-SUPPORTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 679,420, dated July 30, 1901. Application filed December 4, 1900. Serial No. 38,630 (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, HENRY A. GUINZBURG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented Improvements in a Combined Corset-Clasp Lock and Stocking-Supporter, of which the following is a specification.

The combined corset-clasp lock and stocking-supporter forming the subject of this invention belongs to that class of devices in which a pair of stocking-supporters are connected together at their upper ends and combined with means for their suspension from the fastener of a corset.

The essential feature of this invention is a snap-hook or hook having its opening closed by means of a spring-acting jaw attached to the connected upper ends of the elastics or tapes of a pair of stocking-supporters so formed as to be readily caused to engage with the loop or eye of a clasp of a corset-fastener after such loop or eye has been placed over its coacting stud and to so fully occupy the exposed part of the slot of the loop or eye as to prevent the disengagement of said loop or eye, accidental or otherwise, from the stud, thus constituting a perfect lock for the corset-clasp and a secure supporting device for the pair of stockingsupporters; also, performing the function of this class of stocking-supporters in holding down the lower front part of the corset and the function of rocking on its point of support to equalize the strains on the stockingsupporters.

In the carrying out of my invention the elastics or tapes of the stocking-supporters may be attached directly to the metallic suspension-piece, of which the spring-acting or snap hook forms a part, or a flexible pad of suitable fabric may be interposed between the snap-hook and the elastics or tapes, said hook being secured to the central upper part of the flexible pad and the upper ends of the elastics or tapes secured to the lower part thereof.

To more fully describe my invention, I will now refer to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents the combined corsetclasp lock and stocking-supporter provided with a flexible pad and applied in operative position on a corset. Fig. 2 is a side View of the device attached to the front loop of the corset-fastener with the stud-carrying part of the fastener removed; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the suspension-piece with the locking and sustaining hook, showing the elastics or tapes of a pair of stocking-supporters connected directly thereto.

The suspension-piece is formed, as shown, preferably of sheet metal, with an upward extension bent to form the hook a and side ex tension or ears 0 c, and to it is secured by rivets the spring-acting jaw b, arranged to normally close the mouth or opening of the hook. This illustrates a simple form of snaphook; but I do not confine my invention to this particular construction, it being evident that other styles of snap or spring-acting hooks may be used in substitution of the particular style shown.

An essential feature of construction of the hook Ct is that its neck connection with the body portion, comprising the ears 0 o, is of about the same width as the hook, which substantially fills the part of the opening of the loop f left by the stud g, so that it will lie freely in position parallel to the edge of the corset-steel carrying the loop, said neck being of such a length as to admit of the ready manipulation of the hook when being applied to and removed from the loop and to insure the body portion of the device lying snugly against the front of the lower part of the corset, as shown at Figs. 1 and 2.

The elastics or tapes 6 e of the stocking-supporters may be attached to the ears 0 c of the suspension-piece, which, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, are provided with slots for this purpose, or they may be secured by sewing or otherwise to the lower edge of the flexible pad d, the lower part of the suspension-piece, comprising the ears 0 0, being within the folds or sections of the fabric of which it is made and secured to the pad by means of rivets or eyelets which pass through holes formed in the ears 0 c and through the fabric forming the pad, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.

In applying this device to a corset h, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the hook or is passed through the enlarged part of the keyhole-slot IOO of the loop or eye f of the corset-fastener after said loop or eye has been caused to engage with its stud g. The spring-acting jaw or latch 19 by closing the mouth or opening of the hook effectually prevents the accidental disengagement of the hook from the corset-fastener, but by simply being depressed permits of the ready removal of the hook from the loop or eye. To cause the hook at to act as a lock for the corset-clasp, it is made of such a width that when placed in the slot of the loop or eye it will lie between the stud and the end of the slot and occupy so much of the slot as to prevent its enlarged part and the head of the stud g being brought into alinement and so constitute a perfect and positive lock for the corset-clasp, as clearly shown at Fig. 1, it being necessary to remove the hook from the loop or eye before the corset-clasp can be unfastened.

The hook a, is shown applied to the loop or eyefwith its opening and the spring-actingv jaw b exposed or in outer position. It is evident that the position of the hook and springjaw may, if desired, be reversed, so that hook opening and jaw will be next to the corset when the hook is engaged with the corset-loop.

I claim as my invention 1. In a combined corset-clasp lock and stocking-supporter, the'combination with a springacting or snap hook adapted to be engaged with the loop or eye of a corset-clasp projecting from the edge of a front corset-steel with its neck adjacent to .the edge thereof, and adapted to prevent the disengagement of the loop or eye from its coacting stud, of a pair of stocking-supporters connected to the snaphook.

2. In a combined corset-clasp lock and stockin g-supporter, in combination, a pair of stocking-supporters; means, as a flexible pad, for' connecting together the upper ends of their elastics or tapes; and a spring-acting or snap hook attached to the upper end of the stocking-supporters connecting means and adapted to be engaged with the loop or eye of a corset-clasp with its neck adjacent to the edge of the corset-steel carrying the loop or'eye and prevent its disengagement from its coacting stud.
