PRESS..
'SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,548, dated July 16, 1901.
Application led November 13, 1900. Serial No. 36,402. (No model.)
To LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LHAYDEN DAWSEY,a citizen of the United States, residing at Merom, in the county of Sullivan and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Im- Vprovement in Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in presses designed to press fruits, vegetables, and other substances and strain the juice or other liquid therefrom, and has for its object to provide a press which is simple and inexpensive in construction and easy to manipulate.
It consists of the features and combination of features, as more fully hereinafter described and claimed. 4
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View; Fig. 3, a cross-section on line x .fr of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, in which like numerals denote like parts throughout the several views, 1 represents the body of the press, which comprises an annular ring 2, provided with a downwardly-depending frame 3, having a rack 4 on the upper portion of the front and a handle 5 extending from the rear thereof.
Gis a colander or strainer provided with an annular flanged rim 7, which is adapted to lit over and be carried ou the ring 2.
Sis a plunger With a circular head 9, Which tapers from the top downward to correspond to the shape of the colander or strainer in which it operates. 10 is a bracket projecting from the upper surface of said plungerhead and providedwith an eye 1l.
l2 is a plunger-rod having a forked lower end 13 pivoted to the bracket 10 bya pin 14 and at its upper end provided with an elongated slot 15 and a set-screw 1G.
17 is a detachable hand-lever which passes through the slot l5 of the plunger-rod 12 and :is provided with a hole 18 in its end. The plunger-rod is adapted to be adjusted on the said lever to the desired point and then secured at such point by the set-screw 16. The purpose of adjusting the plunger-rod on the lever is to compensate for the change of position resulting from the adjustment of the said lever and for keeping the plunger-head in the center of the colander.
19 is an adjustable link, the upper end of` which engages the hole 18 of the hand-lever 17 and the lower end engages the teeth of the rack 4 of the frame 3 of the press and provides an adjustable pivotal connection between said lever and frame. of the stroke of the plunger is regulated by adjusting the link 19 up or down on the rack 4. 4
By having the several different parts removable it adapts them to be more readily cleaned.
I do not Wish to be restricted to the exact construction as herein shown and described, as the same may be changed somewhat Without departing from the spirit of my inven-.
tion. r
The operation is as follows: The link 19 is disengaged from the rack 4 and the plungerhead 9 and lever 17 are removed. The colander or strainer is then filled with the material to be pressed, the plunger-head, lever, and link again placed in position, and the lever depressed, which causes the plungerhead to be forced downward toward the bottom of the colander or strainer, thereby pressing the soft material therein and expressing the juice or other liquid through its perforations.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim isl. Apress coinprisinga ring with a handle, a frame depending from said ring provided with a rack, a colander or strainer carried on said frame, a lever having a longitudinallyadjustable plunger-rod thereon carrying a plunger, said plunger-rod adapted to be adjusted and fixed at different points on said lever, and means for connecting said lever with said rack, substantially as shown and described.
2. A press comprising a depending frame With a ring at the top, a handle at the rear, and a rack at the front thereof, a colanderor strainer carried by said ring, a detachable lever carrying a link Which engages said rack', and a plunger having a plunger-rod pro-l vided vvith a slot through which said detachable lever is adapted to pass, and means for securing said plunger-rod to said lever, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereto affix my sign nature in the presence of two Witnesses.
HAYDEN DAVSEY.
