UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUSTUS M. WITTE,.OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED CHlMNEY-CASING AND; SIGN.
SPEGIEICATON forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,083, dated July 9, 1901. Application nled December 31, 1900. Serial No.1 41,619. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern: Beit known that I, AUGUSTUS M. WITTE, a citizenof theUnited States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined `Chimney-Casing and Sign, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to a combined sign and chimneycasing; and myprimary object is to provide means whereby the spaces of the chimney-surfaces may be utilized conveniently for sign purposes. y
My invention is illustrated in its preferred form in the accompanying drawings, in which-f Figure l represents a perspective view of a separable casing, the top being partially removed to show the manner of its attachment;
Fig.'2, a bottom plan view of the casing; Fig.
2a, a view of the outer surface of the upper portion of one side of the casing; Fig. 3, a vertical section showing the device applied to a chimney; Fig. 4, abroken section taken as indicated at line 4 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5, a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing a modification of the construction of the body of the casing. Y
A represents a chimney; B, the body of a casing for the chimney; B', a hollow cap for the top of the chimney; C, a rectangular chair orsupport connected with the part B and provided on its upper surface with guidellanges a, and D a cap-piece provided with llanges a', which engage the guides a.
In the construction shown the body portion B comprises detachably-connected sides b b. The sides b are provided with channels b2, with which engage heads b3 of the sides b. In Fig. 2 the channels b2 are shown formed integrally with the sides b and the heads b3 are formed integrally with the sides rIn Fig. 5 the `channels and heads are shown formed separate and attached to their respec tivev parts by rivets. The part B has an inher flange c' and an outer flange c', aording between them a channel which its over the upper portion of thev chimney, thereby protecting the upper course of bricks from rain .and snow. The part C is rigidly connected with the part B and is removable therewith. The upper portion of the body of the casing lits inside the outer flange of the member B',
as shown in Fig. 3. Blocks d are secured to .the outer surface of the sides b, at the upper margins thereof, and said blocks are of just suiiicient thickness to till the space between the flat portion of the sides b and the adjacent flanged portion of the part B. The part B' is detachably connected to the body portion of the casing by screws f.y n AIt will be understood 4from the foregoing description that the part D may be removed by moving it alongits guides, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The part B may be detached by removing the screws f. Any side of the body of the casing may then be removed by moving it longitudinally upward. In Fig. l the dotted lines g g illustrate the manner in which two sides of the casing may be notched or recessed where the casing is to beemployed in connection with a chimney which rises from the ridge of a peaked-roof house.
It will now be understood that lthe part D and the panels forming the separable casing may beemployed as signs and that when it is desired said parts or any of them may be removed and new parts su pplied in their stead. Thus one panel may be employed for a given advertisement or numberfof advertisements for a certain length of time and may then be replaced bya similarly-construct ed panel having a new advertisement or se= ries of advertisements, the other lpanels re; maining undisturbed. In practice the parts of the casing are formed of sheet metal and may be used many times overl by supplying them with new lettering or sign characters.
Changes in details of construction within the spirit of my invention'may 'be made.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A combined chimney-casing and sign, comprising a body portion, a cap having anges embracing the upper margin of said casing and the upper marginof the inner wall 95 of the chimney, and a cap-piece for the chimney'-passage supported at some distance above the last-named member, substantially as described.
2. A combined chimney-casing and sign, rooV comprising a body portion having two of its sides provided with vertically-disposed grooves and two of its sides provided with heads fitting said grooves said sides being reber; `and aftop'for the chimney-discharge re- `movably connected withsaid chair, substan- 1o tiaily as described.

movable, substantial] y as andfor-the purpose described.
3. A combined chimney-casing and sign, comprising a body portion ttsing over the chimney, an annular cap having flanges embracing the upper margin of said bodypor- ,i lion and the inner margin ofthe chimney-top, a chair supported on said last-named mem-
