COUNTER DISPLAY-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 677,108, dated June 25, 1901. Application filed November 24, 1900. Serial No. 37,638. (Ntfmodeh) To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ANDREW LOUIS W'EIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- ledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Counter Display-Box, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to counter displayboxes; and the object of the same is to provide simple and effective means,in connection with the lid or cover of a box, whereby the said lid or cover may be quickly arranged as an easelto receive the box-body and hold the latter in such position that its contents Will be fully exposed to view and readily removable for selling purposes, the lid or cover being also readily adjusted for the purpose of closing the box-body and protecting the contents of the latter and the supporting or looking attachment foldable in close relation to the lid or cover in order to avoid the formation of projectionsthat would interfere with packing the boxes or closely shelving the same.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lid or cover fora box, arranged as an easel, embodying the features of the invention and showing a portion of the box-body in dotted lines and supported thereby, a portion of the lid or cover being broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the form of lid or cover and box-body shown by Fig. 1 arranged in storing condition and showing the compact form of the same. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a modification in the construction, the box-body not being shown. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section of a boxbody and lid thereover, the lid embodying the features of construction shown by Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a box lid or cover embodying a further modification in the easel structure. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal vertical section of a box body and lid or cover, the lid or cover embodying the structural features shown by Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a perspective View of a box lid or cover embodying a further modification in the easel structure. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal vertical section of a box body and lid or cover, the lid or cover embodying the structural features shown by Fig. 7.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several 5 5 views.
The numeral 1 designates a box-body of any suitable form or material and provided with compartments or divisions or not, as may be desired, and under the provisions of the pres- 6o ent invention the lid or cover fitted over the box-body to protect the contents thereof, as usual, is constructed and arranged to produce an easel without in the least detracting from its useful closing service for the box-body, and the several attachments by their compact adjustment and close fold in relation to the lid or cover avoid the formation of interfering projections, and thereby the ordinary desirable close assemblage of the boxes in packing the same and arranging them on shelves is obtainable.
In the form of the lid or cover shown by Figs. 1 and 2 a central break-joint 2 is formed therein to provide supporting-sections 3 and a, the top portion of the section 3 having a tongue 5 cut therefrom along two sides and at one end, the other end being movably held intact with the said top portion to provide a hinge therefor. The freeend of the said tongue has a transverse counter-slot 6, and said free end is removably fitted in a slot '7, cut in the top portion of the section 4: near one end. When the said free end of said tongue has been inserted in the slot 7, the counter-slot 6 is caused to embrace the portion of the top of the section adjacent to one end of the said slot 7, and thereby lock. the tongue against accidental disengagement.
When the two sections are connected by the go tongue, as shown by'Fig. 1, either one of the same may be employed forsupportin g the boxbody and its contents in displaying position, as illustrated by dotted lines. When it is desired to close the box, the tongue is discon- 5 nected and folded into the slot in the section 3 of the lid or cover and the latter then straightened and applied as shown by Fig. 2. The lid or cover shown by Fig. 3 has the same break-joint 2 to form the sections 3 and 4, the tongue 8 having a member 9 pasted or otherwise adhesively applied to the top portion of the section 3 and formed with ahinge by suitably scoring the same, the tongue in other respects in this instance having the same construction as the tongue 5 (shown by Fig. 1) and operating to support the sections 3 and 4 in easel form in a similar manner. WVhen the tongue 8 is disconnected, it is folded down on the top of the lid or cover, as shown by Fig. 4.
The lid or cover shown by Figs. 5 and 6 does not have the break-joint, but is rigid from end to end. From the top of said lid or cover 10 a prop 11 is out along two sides and one end and formed with a scored hinge 12 at the opposite extremity to preserve the integrality thereof with the top of the lid or cover. A tongue 13 is completely out from the prop and is smaller at one end than the other, the small end of said tongue being left integral with the top of the lid or cover at the center of the end opposite that adjacent to which the prop is hinged and the smaller end of the slot in the prop, formed by cutting the tongue therefrom, being at the bottom of said prop when the latter is in supporting position.
' The tongue 13 has its larger end in engagement with the slot in the prop, and when the prop and tongue are arranged to hold the lid or cover for display purposes the enlarged end of the tongue is pushed down to the smaller extremity of the slotin the prop, as shown, and to prevent accidental disengagement of the enlarged tongue end from the prop it is formed with transverse slots 1& to permit a portion of the same to embrace the prop adjacent the opening therein. When the lid or cover is arranged to close the boxbody, the slotted end of the tongue 13 is pushed upwardly in the slot in the prop and both the prop and tongue then closed into the opening in the top of the lid or cover, flush with the latter.
The construction shown by Figs. 7 and Sis similar to that shown by Figs. 5 and 6 except that the tongue 15 has its'wider extremity hinged to the wider end wall of the slot in the'prop, and the smaller free end of said tongue is removably fitted in a slot 16 in the top of the lid or cover, near one end of the latter. It will be observed that the slot in the prop of the lid or cover shown by Fig. 7 is reverse to that shown by Fig. 5, and, in fact, the two structures in these two figures demonstrate the capability of hinging the tongue to the top of the lid or cover or to the prop, and in closing the lid or cover, as shown by Fig. 7, the tongue is disconnected from the slot 16 and folded into the prop, and both the prop and tongue are then pressed into the opening in the top of the lid or cover and flush with the latter. When the lids or covers of the forms of the device shown by Figs. 5 and 7 are arranged as easels, the box-bodies er /310s containing the articles to be displayed are slipped into the same bodily and are thereby The material used in the construction of the lid or cover and the box-bodies may be varied at will, and while some of the many forms of construction involving the principle of the invention have been, shown and described it will be understood that the invention con templates all variations within the same prin ciple. Other changes in the form, size, proportions, and minor details of the several de vices may .be resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is'" p 1. In a counter display-box, the combina= tion of a lid or cover having a supporting por-' tion, and a tongue foldably carried by one portion of the cover and adapted to removably engage the other portion to form an easel to receive the box-body.
2. A counter display-box having a lid or cover provided with a supporting portion forming a part thereof, and a hinged tongue out from and foldably carried by one portion of the lid or cover to removablyengage the other portion of the same.
3. A counter display-box having a lid or cover provided withahinged supportingmemher which completes the same when used for closingpurposes,and ahinged tongue foldably carried by one portion of the said lid or cover to detachably engage the other portion of the same.
4. A counter display-box having a lid or cover provided with a hinged supporting member which completes the same when used for closing purposes, one member of the lid or cover having a slot therein, and a hinged tongue foldably carried by one portion of the said lid or cover to detachabl y engage the slot in the other portion.
5. A counter display-box having a lid or cover with an intermediate break hinge-joint to form two sections, one forming a prop for the other, and a tongue hinged to one section and detachably engaging the other to form an easel to receive and hold the boX-body.
