UNITED STATES PATENT EFrcE.
HARRY O. CLAY, OF COLUMBUS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO REEVES & COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CONNECTING-ROD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,625, dated May 21, 1901.
Application filed February 25, 1901. Serial No. 48,706. (No model.) 4
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY O. CLAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Bartholomew and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Connecting-Rod, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved form of bearing and adjusting means for the end of a connecting-rod, being especially designed for the cross-head end of a connecting-rod to be used in connection with the cross-head de-v scribed and claimed in my application Serial The object of my invention is to so construct the bearing and the support therefor in the rod that the device may be produced at minimum cost and the bearings, although adjustable, may be made of a single piece.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one end of my improved connecting-rod. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the bearing-bushingin position. Fig. 3 is a plan. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the bearing-bushing.
In the drawings, 5 indicates a connectingrod of any suitable material and provided at one end with a head 6, having a substantially circular opening 7, said opening being conveniently formed 'by drilling. Leading into opening 7 and extending therefrom, preferably radially is a slot 8, the rear wall 9 of which is slightly inclined toward the axis of the bore 7. The bearing-bushing is composed of a tough-wearing metal, such-as brass or phospor-bronze, and consists of an annulus 10, which is out entirely across at 11 parallel with the axis. Formed integral with the annulus 10 and projecting radially therefrom is a tongue 12, which is shaped so as to fit snugly within slot 8, the outer end 13 of said lug being parallel with the axis of the annulus l0. Placed between the end 13 of lug 12 and wall 9 of slot 8 is a tapered key 14., which may be '6 of the rod lies, thus holding the bearingbushing in transverse position. Any other desirable means may be used, however, to accomplish this purpose.
By the construction described a very cheap but efficient hearing may be formed in the end of a connecting-rod, and this bearing may be adjusted for Wear by shifting the wedge 14, said wedge operating to drive the lug l2 forward through slot 8, so as to force the ends of the incomplete annulus 10 together, and thus diminish the internal diameter thereof. The bushingmay be cast in a single piece and first brought to the desired internal diameter and then split at the point 11.
I claim as my invention- 1. A connecting-rod having a transverse opening and a slot extending therefrom, a split annulus fitted in said opening and having a tongue extending therefrom into said slot, and means for shifting said tongue in said slot.
2. A connecting-rod having a substantially circular transverse opening and a radial slot extending therefrom, a split annulus mounted in said opening and having a radial tongue extending therefrom into said slot, and means for shifting said tongue in said slot.
3. Aconnecting-rod havingacirculartransverse opening and a radial slot extending therefrom, a split annulus mounted in said opening and having a radial tongue extending therefrom into said slot, a wedge mou nted in the slot behind the tongue and a set-screw for holding said wedge in adjusted position.
HARRY C. CLAY.
