UNTTEE STATES FEICE.
PATENT MULTIPLE-CYLINDER EXPLOSlVE-ENGINE.
SEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 662,155, dated November 2 1900.
Application filed November 18, 1399- Serial NO- 737;500. (NO model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED J. SIeNoR,a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhart, county of Elkhart, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Explosive-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to explosive-engines of that class in which duplicate cylinders are used. The first part of my invention relates more particularly to the arrangement of the cylinders with their pistons and connections in relation to each other, whereby the strains of action are made to counterbalance each other, and thus jarring is avoided, and the second part of the said invention concerns the arrangement or combination of the igniting apparatus in relation to said cylinders.
My said invention comprises duplicate cylinders fixed side by side at any desired angle, each cylinder containing two pistons arranged to act simultaneously, each piston acting in the same manner as the corresponding piston in the other cylinder, the piston in each cylinder being connected to a shaft and the shafts geared together, whereby all strain caused by any set of pistons are counterbalanced by the strain caused by the other set of pistons, whereby jarring is avoided.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure shows a transverse vertical section through both cylinders.
In the drawing is shown the two cylinders A A, which maybe cast in one piece. They are arranged side by side and slightlyinclined one toward the other. These cylinders may be provided with a jacket (shown at 2) inclosing both. In each of these cylinders is a double or duplicate piston a and a. In the casting below the cylinders are mounted crank-shafts B B, the cranks of which are set on opposite sides, as shown at b b, and to the crank b is attached the link d, which connects it with the lower piston a. To the opposite crank Z) is attached a longer link 01, com necting it with the upper piston Ct. The link cl is duplicated and passes up outside of the cylinder A and is connected to the piston a through a cross-head 3, which reciprocates in a slot in the upper part of the cylinder. It is well understood that with this arrangement of duplicated pistons the explosion-chamber is between the piston and by the explosion they are forced apart, the lower piston pushing upon the crank upon one side of the shaft in one direction and the upper piston and the other piston pulling upon the crank on the opposite side, thereby both acting to turn the gear-wheel E. Precisely the same parts are in the opposite cylinderA and marked by the same letters and figures. The crank-shaft B on that side is provided with a cog-wheel E, having the same number of teeth and of the same diameter as E and gearing therewith. The parts are arranged so that the explosions take place simultaneously in both chambers, and the pistons are forced apart simultaneously and in the same directions. As the two cylinders are fixedly connected,the side strain caused by the action of one set of cylinders upon their crank-shaft is counterbalanced by the strain of the other, and, as I have found by actual practice, this engine runs without any jarring effect whatever.
I claim In an explosive-engine, cylinders arranged side by side, said cylinders being rigidly connected, duplicate pistons in each cylinder the explosion taking place simultaneously in said cylinders, a crank-shaft connected to each piston and gearing between said crank-shafts, substantially as described.
