HENRY LEON, OF UNIONVILLE, MISSOURI.
WAGON EN DDGATE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 669,532, dated March 12, 1901. Application iiled October 12, 1900. Serial No. 32,872. (No model.)
T0 all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY LEON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Unionville, in the county of Putnam and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Wagon End-Gate, of which the following is a specifcation.
This invention relates to improvements in end-gates; and the object is to provide a simple and improved construction of end-gate which may be quickly and readily removed from and attached to the wagon-body and securely locked thereto and held from accidental displacement, said construction dispensing with the use of tie-rods for connecting the sides of the wagon-body.
With the above object in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, particularly pointed out in the claims, and clearly illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a wagon-body with my improved end-gate 5 Fig. 2, a similar view showing the end-gate partly open for removal from the wagon-body, and Fig. 3 a rear elevation of Fig. 1.
My improved end -gate is formed of two sections A and B, pivotally connected at their inner ends by hinges O, secured to their inner faces, so that thegate may be drawn outwardly at its center for the purpose of withdrawing the outer ends of the sections A and B from between the pairs of cleats D, secured to the inner face of the side-boards E of the wagon-body. Secured to the outer cleat of each pair is a keeper in the form of a plate F, having a downwardly-extending lug Gr formed intermediate its ends. These keepers receive the angular ends H of swinging locking-bars I, which are intermediately pivoted The inner ends of these bars are also bent angular to receive the bifurcated ends of links J, which are piv- `otally connected thereto, said links at their lower ends being pivotally connected with a lever K, intermediately of the ends of the latter, as clearly illustrated. This lever is pivoted at one end to one of the sections of the end-gate and at .its opposite end carries locking means for securing it when swung downwardly. lt will be understood that when said lever is swung downwardly the inner ends of the locking-bars will also be drawn downwardly, which downward movement of the inner ends causes the upward movement of the outer ends thereof and effects the engagement of the angular portions with the keepers. The reverse movement of the lever causes the disengagement of the locking-bars from the keepers, so that the gate may be drawn outwardly from the wagon-body.
Secured to the free end of the operatinglever is a plate L, having guides M thereon, in which a holt N slides, said bolt engaging a keeper O, secured to the end-gate. The bolt is formed intermediate its end with a handle, which moves between the guides, which constitute stops for limiting the movement of the bolt. When the bolt is projected into the keeper, the handle is turned downwardly between lugs Q, formed on said plate K, so that the accidentaldisengagement of the bolt from the keeper is prevented.
In withdrawing the end gate from the wagon-body or placing the same in position the lever serves not only to operate the locking-bars, but also as a handle to withdraw the ends of the sections of the end-gate from the cleats of the wagon-body and to force the same thereinto.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination with a wagon-body having its sides provided with keepers and ways, of an end-gate composed of two sections having their outer ends engaging in said ways and hinged at their inner ends so that the gate may be drawn outwardly at its center, locking-bars interinediately pivoted to said sections and having their outer ends formed angular to engage the keepers, an operatinglever pivoted at one end to one of said. sections, a keeper carried by the other section, locking means carried by the free end of said lever, engaging said keeper, and links pivotally connecting the inner ends of the locking-bars with said lever, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a wagon-body carrying a keeper, of an end-gate, a locking-bar IOO interinediately pivoted to said gate and adapted am its outer end to engage the keeper, an operating-lever pivoted at one end 'no the gane, a link connecting the inner end of said locking-bar with the lever, a bolt carried by the outer end of said operating-lever, having a handle portion, lugs carried by the lever to receive the handle of the bolt to lock the latter projected, and a keeper carried by the gate to receive said bolt, substantially as de 1o scribed.
HENRY LEON.
