JOHN BEIHL, OF BATESVILLE, INDIANA.
COMBINED BED AND TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 668,479, dated February 19, 190i.
' Application filed August 9, 1900. Serial No. 26,893. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN BEIHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Batesville, in the county of Ripley and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bed and Table; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a combination article of furniture adapted to be used as a bed or table at will.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and convenient construction of article of this character which will occupy a minimum amount of space and which is compact and adapted to be easily converted from one article to the other with slight expenditure of time and labor.
With this and other minor objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure is a side elevation showing the device extended and arranged for use as a bed. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, showing the tubular guides in section. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2, showing the roller and winding devices. Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal section through the meeting ends of one of the fixed and one of the removable end side rails or boards, showing the fastenings connecting same. Fig. 6 is a side elevation showing the device closed up to form a table. Fig. 7 is a cross-section through the same. Figs. 8 and 9 are detail perspective views of the hooks and U-shaped clips.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 designates the end boards, and 2 the corner-posts, of the article of furniture, which is supported by legs 3 at the corners in the usual manner. To
each corner-post is also secured a fixed side board or rail 4, the pair of rails at each end being connected and braced at their inner or free ends by transverse braces 5, which serve also as slats when the device is used'as a bed.
6 designates boards provided with hooks 7, adapted to engage the corner-posts to support the boards vertically to serve as head and foot boards when the device is used as a bed and also adapted to engage cleats or blocks 8 on the side rails 4 to hold said boards in place when used to form the top of a table.-
9 represents guide rods or rails fixed to the side boards or rails 4 and adapted to slide within tubular guides 10, which serve to connect said rods when the two parts or sections of the article are extended to form a bed. A crossbrace 11 connects the tubular guides and also serves as a slat when the device is used as a bed and is provided with a socket to receive a detachable center let, 12. l
13 13 designate removable center side boards or rails adapted to be interposed between the rails 4 when the device is extended to serve as a bed. These center rails are provided at their ends with U-shaped clips 14 to embrace the ends of the rails 4, the arms of said clips being provided with notches 15 to receive fastening-pins 16,adapted to be passed through said rails 4.
v 1'7 representsa cross-bar extending between two of the rails 4 on one section of the device, 18 a roller journaled in the rails 4 of the other section of the device, and 18 a woven-wire band secured at its ends to said cross-bar and roller and adapted to form the bottom of the bed. The roller 18 is provided with journals 19 20 at its ends, mounted in the side rails, and the journal 20 is formed with a rectangular extension 21, carrying a ratchet-wheel 22 and a Winding key or handle 23. By means of this key the roller may be turned to wind up or let out the woven-wire bottom, and to hold the roller against rotation a pawl 24 is provided to engage the ratchetwheel.
25' designates pivoted catches arranged on one pair of rails 4 to engage pins 26 on the other pair of rails 4 to hold the two sections of the article connected when closed together to form a table.
Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, clearly illustrate the manner of adjusting the parts to serve as a bed. When it is desired to adapt the device the construction and mode of operation of for use as a table, the center rails 13 and boards 6 are removed and the two sections of the article slid inward toward each other untilthe inner ends ofthe rails 4 abut, when the catches 25 are engaged with the pins to hold said sections from moving apart. The slack in the wire bottom is then taken up by the winding mechanism, the center rails 13 placed between the rails 4t, and the boards 6 rested on said rails t to form the table-top, with the books 7 engaging the cleats or blocks 8, when a complete table is provided. In changing from a table to a bed the parts removed are placed in position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and the winding mechanism operated to adjust the Woven-wire bottom accordingl'y. v
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
the invention will be readily understood, and it will be seen that a simple and effective combination article of the character described is provided. Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, 1
what I claim as newand useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
1. In a combined table and bed, the combination ofend sections provided with side rails, removable center side rails adapted to fit between the end rails, a cross-brace carrying tubular guides, and guide rods or rails on the end sections sliding in said tubular guides, substantially as set forth.
2. In a combined table and bed, the combination of end sections provided with side rails, removable center side rails adapted to fit between the end rails, a cross-brace carrying tubular guides, guide rods or rails on the end sections sliding in said tubular guides, a reticulated bed-bottom, winding mechanism therefor, cleats on the end sections, and boards provided with hooks to engage the corner-posts on the end sections and the cleats, substantially as set forth,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN BEIHL.
