SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 667,337, dated February 5, 1901.

Application filed April 19, 1900 T0 aZZ whont it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN I/VOODSON RICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplicate-Whist Card- Cases; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to card-cases, and more particularly to a folding case for holding four hands of cards played in the game of duplicate whist, in which the four hands played at one table are played by the players at the next succeeding table.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, and inexpensive card-holder which will securely hold in place the separate hands of cards and which will be compact in construction and occupy but a small amount of space.

lVith this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully setforth.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my improved card-case. Fig. 2 is a top plan View, and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view.

The numeral 3 represents a series of partition-walls of my improved whist card-case, the same being constructed in rectangular form and having secured at their rear ends and flush with the edges thereof cleats 4, made of squared strips of a sufficient thickness for the purpose intended. To the bottom portions of these partition-walls and arranged at suitable distances apart are secured V-shaped spring-clasps 5, having their lower extremities bent at the fastening-point c, the upper end portions thereof being bent outwardly, as at a, and the central or body portions being bent inwardly, as at b, for a purpose presently to be explained. are provided with cut-away concave portions, which permits of the cards being inserted or readily withdrawn from the clasps when desired. To the rear edge portions of the walls and to the rear edges of the cleats is secured a back strip 1, having its edges extending on opposite sides of the outer cleats 4, whereby said edges are adapted to be secured to covers 2, said covers corresponding in size and shape to those of the partition-walls 3. (not shown) may be connected to the front edges of the covers whereby to secure the parts together. I attach importance to the construction of the spring-clasp 5 for the reason that their upper ends being bent outwardly, as shown at a, permits of the cards being readily inserted, also that the body portions being bent inwardly, as shown, per.- mits the cards being held between the clasps and partition-walls, and, further, the clasps being in \l-shaped form permits of the cards being readily withdrawn through the walls thereof, and finally the top edges of: the partition-walls being cut away in concave form permits of a hold being had on the top edges of the cards to Withdraw the same.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

In a duplicate-whist card-case, the combination with the partition-walls, having cleats connected to the rear ends thereof, a back strip secured to the rear edges of the cleats and those of the partition-walls, the ends of the strip being connected to the cover of the case, of the V-shaped clasps having one end secured to the lower edge portion of the walls, the free ends thereof being bent outwardly and the body portion bent inwardly, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
