CLARENCE A. EVANS, OF CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
EDUCATIONAL OR SIMILAR DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,683, dated January 23, 1900.
Application filed August 14, 1899.
(lb all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. EvANs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Delaware, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Educational and Similar Devices, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of an improvement in educational devices provided with two faces, one of which is of gauze or other mesh or perforated material and the other consists of a blackboard and a pad situated between said faces.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an educational device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section thereof on line w as, Fig. 1.. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of another form of the invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a cushion formed of a sheet or piece B of gauze or other mesh or perforated material, a pad 0 of felt, hair, jute, cotton, down, or other suitable substance back of the same, and the frame D, which holds said parts. The piece B is adapted to receive a field E, embodying a map, plan, scene, or other indication painted, printed, or otherwise marked thereon; but, if desired, a sheet with such indications may be placed on the piece B and secured thereto in any suitable manner.
Connected with the frame D is a blackboard or slate F, it now being noticed that the slate and field form the opposite faces of the cushion. In the use of my invention I employ pins or markers G, which may be stuck into the cushion, the same penetrating the sheet between the meshes thereof and entering-the pad 0, whereby they will be nicely and firmly sustained, the walls of the meshes or openings in said piece acting as braces and supports for the markers, thus steadying the same, the pins being stuck into the field of the cushion at localities or objects such as the possessions of a country, stat-ions of an army or navy, railroads, gas or electric lights, fire-hydrants, &c., to be removed and applied elsewhere as changes occur or for the teaching of geography, kindergarten systems, or
Serial No. 727,182. (No model.)
other sciences or studies, amusements, plays, games, 850.
When desired, the slate or blackboard may be used for writing, drawing, figuring, &c., and employed in harmony with the work accomplished by the field and markers, so as to further instruct or improve the mind or memory by delineating or writing on the board or slate such things as may have been indicated by the field and markers.
In Fig. l the slate or blackboard has its frame connected with that of the cushion B or may be an integral member of said frame.
In Fig. 3 the blackboard or slate is shown removable, for which purpose the proper part of the frame has an opening or slot II therein through which said blackboard or slate is movable in application and withdrawal, and it may be made to cover the field, as shown in said Fig. 3.
In order to sustain the cushion in horizontal position, I employ the support .I, consist ing of the standards K and the top L, as a table, on which latter the cushion may be rested when in said horizontal position and which may form an abutment for said cushion when in inclined position, said standards being formed of sections fitted to each other telescopically, so that the upper sections may be raised and lowered in the lower section and retained at the adjusted height by means of pins or fastenings' M, which are passed through suitable openings in the respective sections, the upper sections also forming the bearings for journals N on the cushion, whereby the latter may be .turned or inverted so as to present either face of the cushion above or in front, according to the service that may be required. The cushion may also be placed in inclined positions on the plate by vertically lengthening the openings P, which the journals N occupy, so that either journal has play in vertical direction independent of the other, thus admitting of canting or tilting of the cushion, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, so that the field or blackboard may be more readily viewed at the lowered position of the narrow end of the frame. The cushion may be removed from the standards and the sections of the latter disconnected and all parts formed into a compact bundle convenient for carrying, packing, storage, (to.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An educational device provided with two faces, one formed of a gauze or other perforated material and the other face consisting of a blackboard, a pad interposed between said faces and a frame connecting said parts.
2. An educational device of the character stated, in combination with a support formed of vertically-extending sections telescopically fitted to each other, and a table-top on the lower stationary section of said support, the frame of said device being mounted by a horizontal axis on the upper movable section of CLARENCE A. EVANS;
