Description

Patented Dec. 26, I899.
F. M. F LUYD.
LIFTING JACK.
(Application filed Sept. 13, 1899.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS M. FLOYD, OF OENTRALIA, ILLINOIS.
LlFl'lNG-JACK;
srncrmcnrron forming m of Letters Patent No. 640,120, dated December 26, 18%.
Application filed September 13, 1899. Serial No. 780,312. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS M; FLOYD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oentralia, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks; andI do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact I description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in lifting-jacks 5 and the object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, substan tial, and powerful device for this purpose.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several elements of the device, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved liftingjack, showing it in position for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the adjustable hub-support.
In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention. 1 denotes a hand-lever having a fulcrumblock 2 fixed at its lower end, to which the brace 3 is fulcrumed by the hinge- joint 4, and 5 denotes a staple which is fixed to the brace 8 and is adapted to project through an orifice in the hand-lever and engage a bolt 6, mounted in a longitudinal groove 7 in said lever to lock the brace and lever together when desired.
8 denotes a longitudinal groove formed in the brace 3 and covered by a plate 9, formed with a series of orifices 10, and 12 denotes a prop formed at its free end with a yoke 13 and having a sliding engagement with said groove, the inner end of the prop being formed with a lateral foot 14, terminating in a toe 15, and the foot being adapted to engage either of the orifices 10 in the face-plate, and thus permit the longitudinal adjustment of the prop with reference to the brace- As shown in Fig. 1, the toe 15 projects beyond the plate which forms the bottom edge of the recess, and thus prevents the accidental displacement of the prop when in use. The prop 12 is placed in the groove 8 of the brace and the plate 9 then secured to the brace over the groove. It is of course understood that the groove is of sufficient size to permit of the free swinging movement of the foot of the prop in and out of the orifices 10, into the groove, and its free movement vertically within said groove.
In lifting the axle and partially removing the wheel for greasing the nut may be first removed from the axle and the brace arranged at an angle to the hand-lever with the yoke 13 adjusted beneath the hub of the wheel, which is now lifted clear of the ground by bringing the hand-lever and brace together in a vertical position. The brace may now be locked to the hand-lever by the bolt 6. When the hub is arranged on the yoke, the upper end of the jack is adapted to be moved outward and carry the wheelwith it, so that the axle is exposed a sufficient distance to enable the latter to be readily greased, in order that the operator may perform this service without even touching the wheel.
It will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this in vention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Let ters Patent, isr A lifting-jack comprising the hand-lever formed with a longitudinal bolt-groove and an intersecting transverse orifice, and a bolt having a sliding engagement with said boltgroove, a block fixed to the lower end of said hand-lever, a brace fulcrumed on said block and formed with a longitudinal groove, an orificed face-plate fixed to said brace, and a prop having a sliding engagement with said groove in the brace and formed at its outer end with a yoke and at its inner end with a lateral foot, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANCIS M. FLOYD.
