To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PHILIP J. SOHREIBER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful article of manufacturean Identifying Device; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description ofmy invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an identifying device which can be carried about the person in an inconspicuous manner, around the neck, attached to a watch-chain, or in any manner whatever, and is to serve the purpose of identification.

The object of my invention is to supply a long-felt want for a simple device to identify its carrier. v

My device can be used in different ways and is useful on different occasions. It is intended for theuse of soldiers, especially when engaged in war. It can be used by any one more or less exposed to accidental injury or accidental death for the purpose of identification.

My device is also intended to serve as a means to identify its carrier with some society or societies by containing the peculiar membership-marks of such orders or societies, the picture of bearer, signature of the proper officer, and the seal of such society or societies as an acknowledgment of such membership.

It is intended to supply what is styled the traveling-card of societies.

My invention can also be used as a charm or locket or in connection with either of these. It can also be used by insurance companies, especially by accident-insurance companies, to be Worn by their clients or patrons for the purpose of identification.

With these ends in View my invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrange ment of parts hereinafter pointed out and claimed. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I represents a perspective view of my device. Fig. 11 represents a view of the case with screw-bezel or adjustable collar, for the purpose of holding a picture or ensigns in place, detached from the case. Fig. III represents the receptacle with screw-bezel or adjustable collar detached, also journal box and nut. Fig. IV is a View of spindle, collars or flanges, journals, and identifyingroll separated from one another. Fig. Vrepresents my device with charm attached.

In Fig. II, A is a hollow tube closed at its upper end by a, the head attached to it. I) is a narrow knurled ring forming a circular rim and projecting out and around base of head. 0 represents a screw-thread on head, extending down to ring 1). cl is the thread in lower end, at the inner walls of tube, which fits coupling c of receiver. 3' represents a screw-bezel or adjustable collar provided with thread It at its inner walls, which fits screwthread 0. The collar or bezel is shown here detached.

In Fig. III, B is a hollow tube closed at its upper end by its head f. b is a narrow knurled ring forming a circular rim, which forms a slight extension encircling base of head. 0" is ascrew-thread on head, extending down to ring b. e represents a coupling which fits thread (1. L is a longitudinal slot which extends from a short distance from upper end of tube,cutting through a part of coupling e. O is a circular perforation enlarging a part of slot. Tube B is also provided on it its inner Wall, at its lower end, with thread m. J is an adjustable collar or screw-bezel threaded on its inner walls, which thread fits screw-threaded head of tube B and is shown here detached from tube. Nis a journal-box formed in the following manner: Head f is bored at the center of its base, penetrating a part of its thickness. D represents a j ournalbox. Q is a screw-thread on the outer walls of D, which fits thread m of lower part of tube. P is a head on the screw-threaded box. The perforation or hole of box extends through head P also. E is a nut.

In Fig. IV, S is a spindle. tt represent c01- lars or flanges. a u are journals. '0 o are perforations of spindle. w is a threaded end of journal, which, however, is smaller in diameter than the journal. Thread as fits nut E. Y represents a roll of some flexible material suitable to be either written, printed, etched,

or engraved on paper, pargament, band of copper, 850. Z is a stop made out of either the same material as roll orof apiece of thin metal or leather, all shown here separated from one another.

In Fi V, F is a charm attached to my device in any known way.

Toput the parts together, they are arranged in the following manner: Identifying-roll Y is fastened to spindle either by riveting, sewing, gluing, or pa'sting-whenby sewing or riveting perforations 'u o are made use of. The roll is wound around spindle S, and the whole introduced into tube 13 in such a manner that journal at is by the same action introduced in journal-box N and the free end of roll appears in front of the lips or mouth of slot L. By the aid of a knife-blade or any other handy tool the end of roll is drawn through the slot 0. lhe circular perforation in slot facilitates in the operation by providing easy access to tool. Stop Z is fastened to end of roll, which, being longer than length of slot, prevents it from slipping back into the tube. J ournal-box D is now slipped over threaded end of spindle and fastened to the lower end of tube, leaving threaded end of spindle protruding, to which end nut E is jointed. By the aid of nut E the journals are made to rotate in their respective boxes and the roll is wound up or unwound, according to the direction of rotation given nut E. Information intended to be conveyed by my device should be placed on this roll, which can be done either before or after the roll is introduced into the tube. After the roll is drawn in and its stop resting against the outside lips of slot tube B is teleseoped into case or tube A and jointedtto it by coupling e to thread (1, and by doing so the device becomes dust-proof, and by the insertion M (rubber washer) it becomes also waterproof and air-tight. WVhenever it is de sired to carry any mystic signs, pictures, ensigns,'0r any other appropriate design on the outside of the device, such picture, X50. is laid face upward in the adjustable collar or screw-bezel, and when the collar is screwed into its place the face of picture, 50., is seen through the openin lVhenever receiver or tube B is intended to be removed from its case, knurled ring I) should be used; other wise bezel or adjustable collar may become unscrewed.

I am aware that changes in the form and proportion of parts and details of construction of the device herein shown and described as an embodiment of my invention can be made without departing from the spirit orsacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the scope of the same.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. An identifying device consisting ofa tube B having slot L, circular enlargement O, screw-thread m, a knurled ring I), a head f, j ournal-box N, a spindle S having disks If, t, a screw-threaded end so, perforations 'u, 11', journals to, 1b, a journal-box D having screwthread Q, and a head P, a nut E, a roll Y and a stop Z said parts being combined substantially as described.

An identifying device consisting of'a tube B having slot L, circular enlargement O, screw-thread m, a knurled ring I), a head f, journal-box N, a spindle S having disks i, t, a threaded end 00, perforations o, v, journals u, u, a journal-box D having screwthread Q and a head P, a nut E, a roll Y, a stop Z, said parts being combined substantially as described.
