(Application filed Oct. 20, 1899 (No Model.)
Wz'fneases Invenibr. v QZMMK M NITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
FRED S. MACR ONALD, OF PORTLAND, MAINE, ASSIGNOR TO THE OASCO PAPER BOX COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 646,296, dated March 27, 1900.
Application filed October 20, 1899. Serial No. 784,154 (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, FRED S. MAORONALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in boxes, and especially to boxes having an inner case covered with some soft material, as plush, velvet, &c. It relates more particu larly to the construction of the top of the cover.
As formerly constructed the cover has its top made in two parts, an inner and an outer part, the inner part being flush with the edges of the walls. The covering material on the walls is extended partially over the inner part of the top and the covering material of the top is extended around the edges and partially over the under side of the outer part, the two narrow flanges thus formed lying adjaoent and in contact when the two parts are in position and the outer part lying wholly above the edges of the walls. This construction is objectionable from the fact that the outer part is secured entirely above the wallsof the cover and is more liable to be torn 06. Another serious objection is the great expense attending thepreparation of the outer part, due to the fact that the plush must be put on each one separately, extended around the edges and under the bottom, and glued on the under side as well as on the top, requiring more material and more time.
The object of my invention is to obviate these objections, which I do by countersinking the inner part of the top below the edges of the walls sufficiently to receive the outer part when properly covered flush with the edges of the Walls, thus rendering it possible to cover a large sheet of the'material of which the top of the case is made with'the plush from which the blanks forming the top of the cover may be cut with suitable dies or other means. 1
In the drawings herewith accompanying and making a part of this application, Figure 1 isa transverse sectional view of a jewel case and cover, showing the application of my top to the cover; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box and cover.
Same letters of reference refer to like parts.
In said drawings, A represents a box, and B a cover therefor, of any suitable material and any desired style, that illustrated being the well-known telescoping style. The cover consists of the walls 0 and a top consisting of the inner part D, countersunk sufficiently to permit the reception of the outer part D, which, withits covering material, when in position should be flush with the top edges of the walls. The side walls are covered with any desired material, like plush or velvet E, the material extending over the top edges of the walls and then downwardly and partially across the inner part, as seen at F in Fig. 1. The outer part is covered with similar material, which extends only to the edge thereof.
It will be evident that when the box-cover is.
thus constructed a very perfect top is made to the box at comparatively small expense in respect to material used and time required.
Having thus described my invention and its use, I claim- In a box, a cover having vertical walls and a top composed of an inner and outer part, the inner part countersunk below the top edges of the walls, and the outer part being flush with the top edges of the walls, the covering material of the walls being extended over the edges of the walls and partially across said inner part, and the covering of said outer part extending only to the edges thereof.
In testimony whereof I afljx my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 18th dayof October, A. D. 1899.
' FRED S. MAORONALD.
