To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. COLE, of Newton, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Bell-Strikers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and figures on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to bell-strikers, and has for its object to improve the construction of the same in many respects, whereby it is adapted to strike a great many blows without rewinding and when once started will continue to repeatedly strike the blows until stopped by a manually controlled device, such a bell-striker being especially adapted for use as a fog-signal, although many of the novel features herein shown and claimed are also adapted for use in connection with bellstrikers employed for other purposes-as, for instance, for fire-alarm purposes.
The invention consists in many details of construction, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 shows in vertical section a bellstriker embodying this invention, the controlling mechanism for the striking-arm being contained in a case shown in side elevation, the front plate of which is removed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the means employed for operating the striking-arm. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the means employed for controlling the operation of the train which operates the striking-arm; Fig. 4, a sectional detail of the ratchet, to be referred to. The bell A is mounted upon and supported bya frame B, which maybe composed of two upright side pieces joined together at their upper ends to form an arch which projects up into the bell. This frame may be composed of one piece bent into the desired shape or it may be composed of several parts secured together.

By pivoting the bell-hammer a adjacent the crown of the bell it is thus adapted to oscillate within the bell and to strike a blow when swung in either direction.

The arm a is formed integral with or secured to a cradle a7, which is pivotally mounted upon and supported by a rod or bar a which is supported at its ends in the side plates A A The cradle a carries two pawls a a which are loosely or pivotally connected thereto at opposite sides of the pivot a and the free ends of said pawls rest upon a cam-shaped plate a, which is rigidly supported by the frame, and thereby held in fixed position. A ratchet-toothed wheel a is provided for engaging one and then the other pawl a" a to rock the cradle to", and thereby vibrate the arm a". The ratchet-toothed wheel a is loosely mounted upon a shaft a, having its bearings in the side plates A A and to one side or face of said ratchet-toothed wheel a pawl a is loosely connected, which engages a ratchet-wheel a, secured to said shaft a. The controlling mechanism for the bellhammer, to be described, is herein shown as engaging the arm (0, although, so far as said controlling mechanism is concerned, the said arm a may be the bell-hammer, and therefore the arm a is herein referred to as the striking-arm, meaning the arm which indirectly or directly strikes the blow.
As herein shown,-the striking-arm is adapted to strike the bell when moved in either direction, and consequentlytwo detents c c are provided for looking it, one or the other of which looks said arm after each movement.
The detent c is secured to a shaft 0 which has secured to it a laterally-projecting arm g, which is pressed by a spring g into engagement with a pin g which projects laterally from one side of a lever 0 one end of which lever is loosely mounted upon said shaft 0 so that as said lever is moved on the shaft 0 as a pivot the detent 0 will be correspondingly moved, yet said detent '0 may also be moved independently of the arm in the opposite way, the spring g at such time yielding more or less.
The extremity of the lever c is connected by a toggle-joint c c with a rock-shaft c and as said shaft 0 is rocked the lever a will be moved to operate the detent c.
In Fig. 6 the detent o is represented as locking the striking-arm, and consequently the lever c and toggle-joint are shown in the position which they will occupy at such time, and in Fig. 7 the detent is represented as moved to release the striking-arm, and consequently the lever c and toggle-joint are shown in the position which they will occupy at such time, the shaft 0 having been rocked.
The detent c is secured to a shaft 0', which has secured to it a laterally-projecting arni 9 which is pressed by a spring g into engagement with a pin 9 which projects laterally from one side of a lever 0 one end of which lever is loosely mounted upon said shaft 0 and as said lever is moved on said shaft 0 as a pivot the detent 0 will be correspondingly moved, yet said detent 0 may also be moved independently of the arm in the opposite way, the spring 9 at such time yielding more or less.
The extremity of the lever c is connected by a toggle-joint c 0 with the aforesaid rockshaft 0 and as said shaft is rocked the lever a will be moved to operate the detent c.
In Fig. 6 the detent c is represented as in position to lock the striking-arm, and consequently the lever c and toggle-joint are shown in the position which they will occupy at such time, and in Fig. 7 the detent is represented as moved torelease the striking-arm, and consequently the lever c and togglejoint are shown in the position which they will occupy at such time, the shaft 0 having been rocked.
The toggle-levers c c which are secured to the shaft 0 may and preferably will be made as a single piece, as they always move together.
When the detents are in looking position,
as represented by dotted lines, Fig. 6, the to,,-
gle joints will be straightened, and to move said detents to release the striking-arm the shaft 0 will be rocked to thereby operate the toggle-levers and turn the detents on their pivots, said detents easily moving from beneath the arm which is bearing upon them and exerting a pressure directly toward the pivots of said detents. lever cl is secured to said shaft 0*, and it has at its upper end a laterally=projecting stud or pin 01, which engages and cooperates with a locking device which is operated to release it, and thereby release the striking-arm. The locking device herein shown (see Figs. 6 and 8) consists of a bell-crank lever pivoted at 61 one arm, as e, of which bears two detents e a, one at the upper edge and the other at the lower edge of the arm, and the other arm, as c of which bears a laterally-projecting pin,
or it may be a roller e which is engaged bya' toothed actuating-wheel 6 which is operated by a train. A spring e, bearing upon a pin e on the arm 6 normally presses said pin 6 into engagement with said toothed actuating wheel. As the toothed actuating-wheel revolves and the pin 6 passes over its teeth the arm e will be vibrated to successively release the actuating-lever d, and each time that said actuating-lever is thus released it will A detent-actuating be returned into engagement with its locking device by means to be described preparatory to being again released by the next tooth on the toothed actuating-wheel. The actuating-arm cl has wound upon or connected with its shaft c a spiral spring (1 which is employed to movethe actuating-lever from its locking position, as shown in Fig. 6, into its abnormal position, as shown in Fig. '7, the said arm 61 when in such abnormal position bearing upon a stop-pin 50.
The toothed actuating-wheel e is secured to a shaft f, having its bearings in the faceplates B and B and said shaft fhas secured to it a toothed wheel f,which engages a pin ion f secured to a shaft f bearing a toothed gear f which engages a pinion f secured to a shaft f bearing an escape-wheel f, with which cooperates a pallet f which is secured to a shaft f".
t represents a toothed sector which is secured to a shaft '5, and an arm 1? projects from said shaft 1'', to the extremity of which a weight i is attached, said weight being employed to operate the train to rotate the toothed actuating-wheel 6 The toothed sector 2' engages a pinion t loosely mounted upon the shaft f, and said pinion operates a noiseless ratchet, to be described, the ratchetwheel of which is secured to said shaftf.
A pin on the escape-wheel f is adapted to be engaged by a let-offf secured to the armature m, pivoted at m and adapted to be positively moved in both directions by a polarized relay. hen the armature m is moved in one direction to operate thelet-off f to disengage the escape-wheel and thereby release the train, said train will be operated by the weight i and the toothed actuating-wheel Q will be driven to in turn operate the looking device for the detent-actuating lever d, and when said armature is positively moved in the oppositedirection the let-off f will engage the escape-wheel and stop the train.
' The circuit of the polarized relay m will be operated in any usual or suitable manner, and it will be seen that whenever said circuit is operated and the armature 'm moved to release the train said train will continue to run and rotate the toothed actuating-wheel until said circuit is again operated to restore said armature. By employing a polarized relay having a permanently-magnetized armature it will be seen that said armature may be held positivelyin either position for any length of time by merely reversing the circuit of said polarized relay. A handpiece may be attached to said let-off f for operating it, if desired.
Referring to Fig. 10, m represents a polarized relay, and 71 the two circuit-wires leading from it to the binding-posts 72 73 of a polechanging switch of any usual or suitable construction adapted to be operated by hand, and 74 and '75 represent the circuit-wires leading from the contact-points of said polechanging switch to the commutator 76 of an ordinary hand-operated magneto-generator. Then the pole-changing switch is in one position and the magneto-generator operated, the armature of the polarized magnet will be moved in one direction and will remain in such position until the pole-changing switch is changed and the magneto-generator again between them.

As a means of rewinding the said train which operates the locking device I have herein provided an arm n, which is secured to the shaft t" and which has a laterally-projecting pin n, and an arm 0, which may be termed a re storing-arm, is secured to a shaft 0, which is adapted to strike said pin n on the arm n, and thereby rock the shaft 1" to raise the weight 1?. An arm 0 is secured to the shaft 0, the extremity of which is connected by a link 0 with the vibrating arm a in order that the restoring-arm 0 may be operated during each movement of the arm a Thus the train will .be rewound'during each movement or operation of the arm a. As a means of returning the detent-actuating lever (1 into engagement with its locking device a pin 0 projects from the toggle-lever 0 which is adapted to be struck by a projeotion 0 on said restoringa-rm o, and as. said projection 0 strikes the pin 0 to return the actuating-lever cl the toggle-levers will be operated to return the detents c o to locking position.
The noiseless ratchet referred to consists, essentially, of a plate 19, (see dotted lines, Fig. 6,'and detail, Fig. 4,) which is formed integral with or connected to the pinion i which is mounted loosely upon and adapted to be oscillated on the shaft f, and said plate 10 has at its lower end two projections p p, herein shown as projecting outwardly and disposed a short distance apart, so as to provide a space The pawl 19 which engages the ratchet-wheel, is pivoted to the lower end of the pawl-carrying plate 19, which is also loosely mounted upon the shaftf and located just in front of the plate p, and said pawl 10 has formed integral with or secured to it a projection 19 which enters the space-between the projections p p on said plate 19, so that as said plate 19 is vibrated by the oscillating pinion 11 the said projection 11* will be struck first by one and then the other projection 19,
and the pawl 19 will be moved on its pivot into and out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel. The plate 13 to which the pawl p is pivoted, will also be moved on the shaft f as a pivot by said vibrating plate 19 by reason of the projections p p engaging the projection on the pawl, and as said plate 19 is thus moved at the same time that the pawl is operated it will be seen that the pawl will be bodily carried by it or moved relatively to the ratchet-wheel. When the pawl is operated to disengage the ratchet-wheel by the plate 19 moving in one direction, the plate 12 will at the same time be operated to bodily move the pawl into position to engage another tooth of the ratchetwheel, and when the pawl is operated to engage the ratchet-wheel by the plate 19 moving in the opposite direction the plate 1) will at the same time be operated to bodily move the pawl, and thereby turn the ratchet-wheel.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows:
The polarized electromagnet is first operated to release the escape-wheel f 7 of the train, and the train when thus released operates the tooth-actuating wheel a which in turn operates the locking device for the detent-actuating lever cl. The detent-actuating lever 01 when thus released moves into the position shown in Fig. 7, and through the medium of the toggle-joints and lever connections with the detents c and c said detents c and a will both be moved out of locking engagement with the arm a to thereby release said arm. The arm a thus released will be operated by the cradle-pawls to in turn operate the bellhammer. As the arm a thus moves in either direction to operate the bell-hammer it operates therestoring-arm 0 through the medium of the link connection, and said arm 0 in turn restores the detent-actuating lever cl, and thereby moves the detents c and 0 into position to lock the arm a at the end of its stroke. The arm 0 also at such time rewinds the train which operates the tooth-actuating wheel 6 This operation will be continuously repeated until the operator desires it shall cease, and then the arm f is moved into position to engage the escape-Wheel f and stop the train. The arm f will be moved to engage the escape-wheel and stop the train by the polarized electromagnet, which will be oper ated by the magnetogenerator, the polechanging switch being properly manipulated for accomplishing this result.
I claim- 1. In a bell-striker, a striking-arm, means for moving it positively in each direction to strike a blow, a detent for locking it after each movement, an actuating-lever connected with and adapted to operate said detents to release the striking-arm, a locking device [or said actuating-lever and a toothed wheel driven bya power-propelled train for operating said locking device to release said actuating-leve r, substantially as described.
2. In a bell-striker, a striking-arm, means for moving it positively in each direction to strike a blow, a detent for looking it after each movement, an actuating-leverconnected with and adapted to operate said detents to release the striking-arm, a locking device for said actuating-lever, a toothed wheel driven by a train for operating said locking device to release said actuating-lever and means operated by the striking-arm when moving in both directions for returning said actuating lever into engagement with said locking device and returning said detent-s to locking position, substantially as described.
3. In a bell-striker, a striking-arm, means for moving it positively in each directionto strike a blow, a detent for locking it after each movement, a train-controlled mechanism for operating said detents at predetermined times to release the striking-arm, and means .operated by the said striking-arm for winding up the motive power of said train, substantially as described.
4. In a bell-striker, a striking-arm, means for moving it positively in each direction to strike a blow, a detent for looking it after each movement, a train-controlled mechanism for operating said detents at predetermined times to release the striking-arm, and
means operated by the said striking-arm when.
moving in both directions for winding up the motive power of said train, substantially as described.
5. In a bell-striker, a striking-arm, means for moving it positively in each direction to strike a blow, a detent for looking it after each movement, an actuating-lever connected with and adapted to operate said detents to release the striking-arm, a locking device for said actuating-lever, a toothed wheel driven by a train for operating said locking device to release said actuatinglever, means operated by the striking-arm when moving in both directions for returning said actuating-lever into engagement with said locking device and returning said detents to locking position,
and means also operated by said striking arm when moving in both directions for winding up the motive power of said train, substantially as described.
6. In a bell-striker, a striking-arm, means for moving it. positively in each direction to strike a blow, a detent for looking it after each movement, toggle-levers connected with said detents for operating them to release the strikingarm, an actuating-lever for said toggle-levers, a locking device for said actuating-lever and means for operating said locking device to release said actuating-lever, substantially as described.
7. In a bell-striker, a striking-arm, means for moving it positively in each direction to strike a blow, a detent for looking it after each movement, toggle-levers connected with said detents for operating them to release the striking-arm, an actuating-lever for operating said toggle-levers, a locking device for said actuating-lever, a toothed Wheel driven by a train for operating said locking device to release said actuating-lever, a let-off for said train and means for positively moving it in both directions to start and stop the train at will, substantially as described.
8. In a bell-striker, a striking-arm, means for operating it, train controlled locking mechanism for said striking-arm, a let-off for said train controlled locking mechanism, a polarized electromagnet for operating said let-0ft, a generator for the circuit of said polarized electromagnet and a pole-changing switch, substantially as described.
9. In a bell-striker, a striking-arm, means for operating it, locking mechanism for said striking-arm, a turning device controlling said locking mechanism, a let-01f for said timing device, a polarized electromagnet for operating said let-off, a generator for the circuit of said polarized electromagnet and a pole-changing switch, substantially as described.
10. Inabell-striker, a striking-arm, means for moving it positively in each direction to strike a blow, a detent for locking it after each movement, train-controlled mechanism for operating said detents at predetermined times to release the striking-arm, a let-oft for said train, a polarized electromagnet for operatingit, a generator for the circuit of said polarized electromagnet and a pole-changing switch, substantially as described.
11. In a bell-striker, a striking-arm, means for operating it, a detent for locking said striking arm, an actuating lever therefor, a locking device for said actuating-lever, a train for operating said locking device to release said actuating-lever, a let-off for said train, a polarized electromagnet for operating it, a generator for the circuit of said polarized electromagnet and a pole-changing switch, substantially as described.
12. In abell-striker, astriking-arm, means for moving it positively in each direction to strike a blow, detents c, 0, one or the other of which locks it after each movement, a spring actuated lever connected with and adapted to operate said detents to release the striking-arm, a locking device for said spring-actuated lever and means for operatin g said locking device to release said springactuated lever, substantially as described.
13. In a bell-striker, a striking-arm, means for moving it positively in each direction to strike a blow, detents c, a, one or the other of which looks it after each movement, an actuating-lever connected with and adapted to 0perate said detents to release the strikin -arm, a locking device for said actuating lever, means for operating it to release said actuating-lever, an arm 0 connected with and operated by the striking-arm for engaging a cooperative part of the detent-actuating mechanism when moving in both directions to return said actuating-lever into engagement with its locking device, substantially as described.
14. In a bell-striker, a striking-arm, means for moving it positively in each direction to strike a blow, detents c, 0, one or the other of which looks itafter each movement, an actuating-lever connected with and adapted to operate said detents to release the striking-arm, a locking device for said actuating lever, means for operating it to release said actuating-lever,t-he toggle-joint 0 ,0 ,connected with and operated by said striking-arm, the pivot ed arm 0 operated by said toggle-joint to engage a cooperative part of the detent-actuating mechanism when moving in both directions toretnrn said actuating-lever into engagement with its locking device andreturn said detents to locking position, substantially as described.
15. In abell-striker, a striking-arm, means for moving it positively in each direction to strike a blow, detents c, 0, one or the other of which looks it after each movement, an actuating-lever connected with and adapted to operate said detents to release the striking-arm, a locking device for said actuating-lever, a train for operating it, the arm 0 connected with and operated by the striking arm for winding up the motive power of said train, substantially as described.
16. In a bell-striker, a bell having its oscillating hammer contained within it and pivoted adjacent the crown of the bell, the short arm a and the longitudinally-reciprocating rod a connected at one end to said shortarm a the vibrating arm a to which the opposite end of said rod a is connected, the rocking cradle a bearing said arm a", pawls carried by said cradle, and apower'propelled ratchetwheel for operating said pawls to rock said cradle, substantially as described.
17. In a bell-striker, a bell having its oscillating hammer contained within it and pivoted adjacent the crown of the bell, the short arm a and the longitudinally-reciprocating rod a connected at one end to said short arm a, the vibrating arm a to which the opposite end of said rod or is connected, the rocking cradle a bearing said arm a, pawls carried by said cradle, and a power-propelled ratchetwheel for operating said pawls to rock the cradle, the balancing spring I) for the bellhammer, a bell crank lever, one arm b of which is connected to said spring and the other arm 12 of which is connected by a toggle-joint with said cradle, substantially as de- I scribed.
