LAURA II. JOHNSON, OF BATTLE GREEK, MICHIGAN.-
GARMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,606, dated March 6, 1900. Application filed October 26, 1899. Serial No. 734,800. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURA H. JOHNSON, of Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates particularly to bustsupports; and the object is to provide a bustsupport that shall be entirely free of stifiening devices, such as bones or steels, thus holding the bust firmly and naturally, leaving the body of the wearer entirely free from constriction, especially over the epigastrium, that is usually drawn in by the ordinary bustsupports having belts or bands for encircling the body.
I will describe a bust-support embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference isto be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front view of a bust-support embodying my invent-ion. Fig. 2 is a back view of the same. Fig. 3 shows a slight modification of the device as open, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of part of another modification.
The support comprises a back portion 1, which is shown-in Figs. 2 and 3 as extended to a point at the bottom, and a fastening device or buttonhole 2 is provided at the point to receive a button on an undergarment. Shoulder portions or straps Sfare extended from the back, and attached to the shoulder portions and also stitched to the side edges of the back below the armholes 4 are the fronts or pocket-forming flaps 5.
5 are extended to a point or are substantially of triangular form, and the ends are designed to be tied together, as indicated in Fig. 1.
In use when the device is on the body of The fronts the wearer the ends of the fronts are to be gathered up in the hands and firmly tied together. When the fronts are thus gathered up and tied, pockets are formed for the bust to rest in, and the slight fullness 6 in the fronts at the bottom of the side seams aids materially in the formation of the pockets.
For convenience in nursing the fronts may be provided with openings 7, and these openings'may be closed by flaps 8, attached to the fronts 5 underneath the openings and buttoned at the top.
. Instead of extending the bottom of the back portion to a point it may be run straight across, as shown at 9 in Fig. 4c, and buttons or other fastening devices secured thereon.
In practice I so construct the'bust-support that the threads of the cloth run from the bottom of the back up over the shoulders to the front, which gives great firmness and ofiers strong resistance to the pressure brought to bear when the pockets are formed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 4 A bust-supporting garment having a back portion, armholes, and forwardly-projected front portions and fulled throughout the breast portions of said fronts to form concave pockets, said front portions having their up per and lower edges convergent toward their free ends and being made of freely-pliable material whereby the ends may be tied together in front to connect the said front por tions in any desired adjustment and, at the.
same time, form with the aid of the fulling formation of said parts, the pockets for the bust substantially as set forth.
LAURA H. JOHNSON.
