- My invention relates to hooks for attaching load-carrying devices to cables or ropes, by means of which they are raised or lowered; and the object thereof is to provide a hook, by means of which a bucket or cage may be quickly fastened to or unfastened from a rope or cable, and at the same time will provide the maximum safety against the accidental unfastening of the hook from the bucket or cage bail. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chloride, in the county of Mojave, in the Territory of Arizona, have invented a new and use ful Safety-Hook, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hooks for attaching load-carrying devices to cables or ropes, by means of which they are raised or lowered; and the object thereof is to provide a hook, by means of which a bucket or cage may be quickly fastened to or unfastened from a rope or cable, and at the same time will provide the maximum safety against the accidental unfastening of the hook from the bucket or cage bail. I accomplish these objects by means of the mechanism described. herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of my safety-hook. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of the lower end of the hook, showing the latch in its closed position and in dotted lines in its open position for the reception of the bail of a bucket or cage, the clip by which the latch is fastened in place in the hook being removed for eclearness of illustration. Figs. at and 5 are a side and end view of the clip by which the latch is fastened on the shank of the hook. Fig. 6 is a cross-section of my hook on line 6 6, Fig. 1. Figs. 7 and 8' are a side and end view of the latch. Figs. 9, 10, and 11 are detached views of the catch. Figs. 12 and 13 are a side and end view of the dust-plate, which excludes the dirt from the catch.
In the drawings, A designates the complete hook. On the upper end of the shank B is a swivel C, to which the rope or cable is fastened. Slidably mounted on shank B is latch D, in one end of which is pin D, which enters recess E of body E of the hook. Latch D is held in sliding contact on shank B by clip F, which passes around shank B and is fastened to latch D by bolts G, which pass through holes therethrough. H are catches, eachhavingaprojectingflatarmH. Catches H have a sliding motion at right angles to shank B in recesses 01 in latch D. One end of catches H are normally held shut by springs I, mounted in sockets d in latch D in recesses which project through openings F in clip F, by means of which the catch is opened.
J are slides to keep the dirt out of the catch, having holes J, which fit over lugs H",to which they are fastened by screws K, which enter a threaded opening in lugs H.
Catch H, spring I, slide J, and screw K, with the recesses, are alike for each side of the hook; but each set works independently of the other. Y
My device is operated as follows: Using for illustration an ore-bucket for hoisting ore from a mine, the cable is fastened in swivel C. By pushing on both slides J at the same time catches H are withdrawn from recesses b of shank B and latch D is permitted to slide up on shank B. The bail of the bucket is then placed in the hook and latch D is returned to the position shown in Fig. 1, when the catches H will hold latch D against accidental displacement, and the bucket is thereby kept attached to the hook and the safety of the miners from the accidental unfastening of the bucket from the cable while it is being-hoisted is assured. One of the sources of danger in mining is the accidental unfastening of the hoisting-bucket on its passage up and down the shaft, which frequently tion of property. This is frequently occa; sioned by the hook by which the bucket is attached to the cable striking against some projecting piece of timber, which unfastens the catch on the hook and the accidental unfastening of the bucket follows. In my device such accidental unfastening of the hook from the bucket is practically impossible, as I provide two catches which work independently, one on either side of the .hook, and which must both be opened at the same time before the latch can be opened to permit the bail of the bucket or cage being withdrawn from the hook. The movement of these catches is at right angles to the movement of the latch, which permits the release of the bail from the hook, so that it is an impossibility that any accidental striking of the hook would at the same time strike both the catches, (one being on each side of the hook,) retract them from their seats in recesses in the shank and at the same time impart t0 the b in shank B. Catches H have lugs H,
latch a movement at right angles to the movement of the catch and then throw the hail of the bucket out of the hook, all of which successive movement-s being necessary in order to remove the hail of the bucket from the hook. It will be observed that When it is desired to remove the bucket from the cable it is very easy to retract both catches and then slide the latch and clip upon the shank and remove the bucket-bail from the hook.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure Letters Patent, is
1. A safety-hook for attaching load-carrying devices to ropes and cables comprising a hook having a shank, a latch slidably attached to the shank, intermediate the swivel and the body of the hook, adapted when closed to keep the hail of the load-carrying device from separating from the body of the hook; catches mounted in recesses in the latch, adapted to enter recesses in the shank and keep the latch closed, and having projecting lugs to open said catches; springs mounted in the latch, adapted to keep the end of the catches in the recesses of the shank, substantially as described herein.
2. Safety-hook A, com prising shank B, having recesses 11; body E; swivel C on end of shank B; latch D slidably mounted on shank B; clip F attached to latch D and passing around shank B; catches H provided with arm H and lugs H, slidably mounted in recesses d in latch D, and having one end adapted to enter recesses bin shank B; spring I mounted in recesses in latch D, and adapted to hold the end of catches II in recesses b of shank B, substantially as described herein.
