THOMAS MILLERgR., AND VILLIAM O. JOSLIN, OF SPRING-BOROUGH, OHlO.
PACKING-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,135, dated August 29, 1899.
Application led May' 18, 1899. Serial No. 717.293. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, THOMAS MILLER, Jr., and WILLIAM O. JOSLIN, of Springborough, in the county of Tarren and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Packing- Case, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to knockdown packing-cases particularly adapted for leaf -tobacco; and the object is to provide a knockdown packing-case with a simple fastening device for securing the several parts together and so arranged that there are no projections from the outer surface, so that several cases may be closely packed together for shipment or storage.
We will describe a packingcase embodying our invention, and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying` drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure 1 is a vertical section, on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2, of a packing-case embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the .line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a face view of a portion of one of the members of the case.
The case comprises the two sides 1 2, the top 3, the bottom 4, and the end pieces 5. The top and bottom are each provided near the ends with cleats 6 7, and the side pieces are provided near the ends with similar cleats 8 9. The end pieces are provided near the ends with cleats 10 11, the space between the outer sides of these cleats 10 and 11 and the end pieces 5 being equal to the width of the cleats and 7. The cleats of the sides and top and bottom are mitered at the ends, so as to engage closely one With another.
The fastening devices consist of bolts having sections 12 13 arranged at right angles to each other. These sections 12 and 13 are threaded to receive clamping nuts 14 15. There are eight of these fastening-bolts, which serve to hold all the parts of the box firmly together. The sections 12 of the bolts pass through the cleats 10 and 11 on the end pieces 5 and also through the cleats 6 and 7 on the top and bottom 3 and 4, while the sections 13 of said bolts pass through the cleats 8 and 9 of the side pieces 1 and 2, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. It will be noted that the clampingnuts and the ends of the bolts are arranged wholly within openings formed in the sides, top, and bottom of the case, so that there are no projections from the outer surface of the case.
The sections 12 of the bolts are provided with shoulders or collars 16, which engage against the inner surfaces of the cleats on the end pieces of the case and will serve to prevent any rocking movement of the bolts. In packing the case the sides, ends, and bottom are to be secured together. Then, after placing the tobacco or other material in the case, the cover is to be placed in position and the nuts tightened on the bolts.
This case is especially arranged to suit the `requirements of a tobacco-case, allowing easy removal of top or bottom or sides to examine the quality or condition of the contents, which is frequently required, and it also facilitates stripping the case or the removal of the contents. In cases as ordinarily constructed this is done by removing the lid and turning the case top downward and slipping it up, leaving the contents in compact form. This is diliicult to do when a rigid case is used. In our invention by loosening the nuts on the sides of the case the latter is allowed to eX- pand and is readily lifted from its contents.
Having thus fully described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure-by Letters Patent- 1. In a knockdown packing-case, end pieces having cleats on the inner side, top, bottom and side pieces having cleats on the inner side, and fastening-bolts each consisting of sections arranged at right angles to each other and adapted to be passed through openings in the cleats, a shoulder on one of the sections for engaging the inner side of the case, and nuts for engaging the screw-threaded portions of the bolts, substantially as specified.
2. A knockdown case, comprising end pieces, cleats on the inner side of said end pieces, top and bottom pieces having cleats for engaging with the cleats of the end pieces, side pieces having cleats for engaging with the cleats of the end pieces, fastening-bolts having portions extending through the end-piece cleats and the top and bottom piece and also IOO having portions extended through the side ing through holes in the oase material, each cleats, and clamping-nuts for engaging the bolt having a shoulder on one of its sections threaded portions of the bolts, the outer ends for engaging the inner side of the ease, subof the bolts and the clamping-nuts being ztrstantially as speeiiied.
5 ranged Wholly Within the outer surface or plane of the casing, substantially as specified. 3. In t knoekdown packing-case,end pieces, k
top pieces, bottom pieces and side pieces and Witnesses:
fastening-bolts each consisting of sections zir- XVM. BAXTA,
Io ranged at right angles to each other and passlV. I'I. SEIGFRIED.
