UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. MOLAUGHLIN, OF JESUP, GEORGIA.
LUBRICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,061, dated November 28, 1899.
Application filed April 6 1899. Serial No. 711,984. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JAMES A. MCLAUGHLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at J esup, in the county of Wayne and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates especiallyto lubricators for vehicle-axles, but is equally appli- A cable to machinery generally having rotative bearing-surfaces. It is automatic in action and on vehicles serves as a dust-guard for the hub.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention,Figure 1 being an exterior side view and showing a part of a vehicle-hub. Fig. 2
is a vertical section of the lubricator and part of a hub and shows the relative positions of the interior parts with reference to the axle and nut N. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the diaphragm and oil-tube, and Fig. et is an elevation of the opposite side of the diaphragm and the pivoted cut-off.
The letter A indicates the tubular box or casing of the lubricator. Its interior is divided into two sections by a diaphragm G, forming an oil-chamber B and an open section a, the latter having its interior surface threaded at a to engage an exterior thread It on the hub. The diaphragm carries on its surface which faces the oil-chamber a tube D, preferably curved, having a flaring mouth at at its advancing end, a lateral aperture (1 near its other end, and at that end another lateral opening 01' (shown in dotted lines) on the opposite side of the tube and communicating through an openingc in the diaphragm with the open section a of the box. On the side of the diaphragm facing the open section a is a thin strip E, pivoted to the diaphragm at e, on which it may turn, and adapted before the lubricator is attached to the hub to be set so as to wholly or partly cover the opening 0 and so regulate or stop entirely the flow of oil.
The inner side of the curved end of the box is provided centrally with a longitudinallythreaded boss F about the oil-supply hole f, which is filled by the screw-plug f, having a countersunk head.
A flange or band G on the open end of the,
box is provided with wrench-seats g g to facilitate the attachment and detachment of the box and hub.
In operation the flaring mouth of the tube during the revolution of the hub takes up the oil, which flows into chamber a through aperture c. Any overplus of oil in chamber a. is prevented by the aperture or vent d, which is accurately placed to carry back into chamber B the flow of oil when the oil has risen in chamber a to the lower edge of the axle.
What I claim is-- 1. A lubricator comprising a tubular box attachable to a hub, and whose interior is divided by a perforated diaphragm into an oilchamber and an open chamber, a tube on said diaphragm in the oil-chamber having a flaring mouth on its advancing end, a lateral aperture near its other end opening into the oil-chamber and a lateral opening at its small end opening through the diaphragm into the open chamber for the purposes herein set forth.
2. A lubricator comprising a tubular box attachable to a hub, and whose interior is divided by a perforated diaphragm into an oilchamber and an open chamber, a tube on said diaphragm in the oil-chamber having a flaring mouth on its advancing end, a lateral aperture near its other end opening into the oil-chamber and a lateral opening at its small end opening through the diaphragm into the open chamber, and a cutoff on the diaphragm to regulate the flow of oil substantially as herein described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES A. MOLAUGHLIN. Witnesses:
D. L. Grrr, V L. H. HERNDON.
