To a whom it may concern.-

Beit known that 1', ROBERT N. FoUsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ohnstown, in the county of Oambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Removable Handle for Crooks, &c., of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to handles for receptacles of various kinds, and has forits object to provide a removable bail-handle which is adjustable to fit receptacles of different sizes, and is particularly designed to be applied to stone crooks to facilitate the handling thereof.

To these ends the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be' hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved handle fitted to a crock. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the handle detached. Fig. 3 is a view of the hooked end of the bail, showing the position thereof prior to being tightened. Fig. 4 is a similar View showing the handle as tightened.

Corresponding parts are designated by like reference characters in all the figures of the drawings.

. Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the bail-shaped handle, formed of heavy wire and provided with a hand-grasp.

2 intermediate of its ends similar to an ordi nary bucket-handle; One end of the bail is twisted into an eye 3, having its opening disposed at right angles to the plane of the bail. The opposite end of the bail is bent into a hook 4, which extends upward in the plane of the bail.

A horizontally-disposed band of wire 5 has one end twisted into an eye 6, which is engaged with the bend of the hook 4, whereby the band is connected at one end tothe bail. The opposite end of the band passes loosely through the eye 3 at the other end of the bail and has its free extremity formed into an eye 7. This latter end of the band does not continue around to the fixed end, but terminates shortthereof and is connected therewith by a flexible connection 8. This connection is preferably a chain, having one end permanently connected to the eye '7 at the free end of the band 5 and adapted to have its other end engaged with the hook 4, provided upon the bail, whereby the band is adapted to encircle the crock or. other receptacle to which the handle may be fitted.

The application of the device is shown in Fig. 1, in which the band 5 embraces the body of a -crock 9 against the under side of the flange 10,commonlyprovidedabout the mouth of the crock. To fit the device to a crock, the band 5 is placed about the same, the operation being facilitated by the opening between the opposite ends 6 and 7 of the band 5. After the band has been thus embraced about the crock the bail 1 is folded down horizontally toward the free end 7 of the band, as illustrated'in Fig. 3. Then one of the links of the chain is engaged with the end of the hook 4,

which is crooked, as at 11, to hold the chain about the crock. The device may be readily removed from the crockby a reverse movement of the bail, and the chain affords an adjustable connection for the free end of the band, as any of the links thereof may be engaged with the hook 4, whereby the device is adjustable and may be fitted to crooks of difierent diameter.

I It will be noted that the hook 4 is, in effect, a lever havinga pivotal connection or fulcrum located at the fixed end of the band 5, whereby a tension may be had upon the band. The band passes loosely through the eye 3 to permit of the same having a longitudinal movement through the eye during the positioning and removal of the device and when connecting the band to the bail.

Changes in the form, proportion, size, and the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacri ficing any of the advantages of the present invention. I

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. A removable handle for crooks and the like, comprising a horizontally-disposed flexible band having an opening formed through one side thereof, a bail-handle carrying the band, the latter having one end relatively fixed to the bail and the opposite end free, a lever provided at the fixed end of the band, and a flexible adjustable connection between the free end of the band and the lever, the latter being adapted to place a tension on the band, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a bail-handle having a hook at one end, of a horizontally-disposed flexible band having an opening formed through one side thereof and pendent from the opposite ends of the bail, one end of the band being relatively fixed to the hook end of the bail and the opposite end being free, and a flexible adjustable connection between the free end of the band and the hook of the hail, the latter being adapted to be operated, whereby a tension may be had upon the band, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a bail-handle having a hook at one end, of a horizontally-disposed flexible band having an opening formed through one side, the bail being swung to the band, and a flexible connection between one end of the band and the hook of the bail, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a bail-handle having an eye at one end and a hook at the other end thereof, of a horizontally-disposed band having an opening formed through one side, and the opposite ends of the band being each provided with an eye, the hook of the bail being loosely received in one of the eyes of the band and the other free end of the latter passing loosely through the eye of the bail, and a chain connected to the free end of the band and adapted to be engaged with the hook of the bail, substantially as shown and described.

5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a bail-handle, of ahorizontally-disposed flexible band having an opening formed through one side thereof, one end of the bail being swung to one end of the band and the opposite end of the bail having a slidable hinged connection with the band, and an adjustable connection between the free end of the band and the end of the bail which is swung to the opposite end of the band, the bail being adapted to be swung upon its connection with the band to tighten the latter, substantially as shown and described.
