UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JoHN s. LEE, OF TUCKER, UTAH.
STRETCHING DEVICE FOR WIRE MATTRESSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,936, dated October 31, 1899.
Application filed August 4:, 1899.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN S. LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tucker, in the county of Utah and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tension Devices for WovemWire Mattresses and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to an improved tension device for taking up the sag or slack in woven-wire mattresses.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and effective device for taking up the sag or slack in the mattress, due to the expansion of the coils, caused by use.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the device, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tension device for woven-wire mattresses. Fig. .2 is a similar view showing the application of the device.
In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
1 denotes a clamp, the parallel arms of which are formed with a common shank 2 to receive the bolt 3, on which is fulcrumed the hand-lever 4. These arms are also connected at the forward open end of the clamp by a stay-bolt or brace 5, and one of the arms is provided with the thumb-screws 6 6 to secure the clamp to the side rail, as shown in Fig. 2.
7 denotes a stirrup adjustably pivoted to the hand-lever 4: by means of the bolt 8, and
Serial No. 726,076. (No model.)
9 denotes a shoe, the bill-hook 10 of which engages the looped end of the stirrup. The opposite end of the shoe is formed with a rectangular jaw 12 to receive the end rail, as shown in Fig. 2.
The manner of using the device is to adjust it to the mattress-frame, as shown, then slacken up the bolt connecting the side and end rails, and by means of the hand-lever draw the end rail outwardly until the proper tension has been applied to the wire bottom. When this has been accomplished, the aforedesignated bolt connecting the side and end rails is then tightened up to retain the rails in their adjusted position. I
Of course it is understood that the end of the side rail is slotted to receive the bolt, so as to provide for the adjustment of the end rail in the manner hereinbefore set forth.
Various changes in the. form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Let= ters Patent, is-
The bifurcated clamp, a stay-bolt or brace connecting its parallel arms, and thumbscrews mounted in one of said arms, a hand lever fulcrumed on said clamp, a stirrup adjustably pivoted to said lever, and ashoe detachably engaging said stirrup, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN S. LEE.
