PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part ef Letters Patent No. 635,806, dated oeteieerV 31, 1899. Application filed July 28, 1898. Serial No. 6 87,064. (No model.) a
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID ROBERT RAMsnY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Haven, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Vrenches 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication. b
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pipe-wrenches.
One object of myinvention is to provide a simple, strong, durable, and practical form of pipe-wrench that can be made at comparatively small cost.
Another object is to provide a wrench with a movable jaw that is self-adjusting to various-sized pipes, as well as other novel features.
l/Vith the above objects in viewthe invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more speciiicall y described in detail.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference designate like parts throughout theseveral views,in which-'-l Figure l is a side view of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the adjustable jaw removed from the stock.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates a handle or stock of forged steel, the upper end of which is turned over to form a jaw l. This jaw is serrated at its under side, with the notches pointing inwardly or toward the stock. An adjustable block 2, notched at its inner edge to correspond and engage with the notches 3 of the stock, is provided and has formed therewith the strap 2', through which the stock is inserted, and a setscrew 4f is provided at the rear of the block for securing the same rigidly to the stock. A double jaw 5, formed of a single piece of metal rounded at its top, with notches formed thereon and doubled over, as shown at Fig. 3, is provided. This jaw is pivoted through both sides to the block 2 by a pin 6 and in order to guide it in its movement has its ends bent at right angles to form the legs 5', which loosely embrace the sides of the stock. A flat spring 7 is secured upon the front part of the block, extending upward, and engages with the jaw, thereby making the jaw spring-actuating.
In the view shown at Fig. l the lower jaw is extended to almost its limited point of usefulness-that is, to take in the largest-sized pipe; but when moved over to the position as shown by dotted lines it will engage pipe of smaller diameter. By this means pipes of various sizes may be operated upon, and by movL ing the adjustable block upward to bring the jaws closer together smaller pipes may be worked, or moving downwardly of the block still larger pipes can be operated upon.
In use the wrench is worked as indicated by the arrow.
Having thus fully shown and described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a wrench of the class described, the combination, with the stock or shank bent at its outer end to form a fixed head or jaw having its inner face provided with teeth inclined inwardly toward the stock or shank, of an adj ustable block mounted upon the stock or shank and adapted to be moved longitudi- ,nally thereon, a set-screw arranged in said block and adapted to engage the back of the stock or shank for holding the block in the desired position, and a spring-pressed double inner jaw pivotally secured to the block and having its gripping-faces provided with teeth inclined outwardly and its ends bent at right angles to loosely embrace the stock or shank and guide the said double jaw during its movement, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a wrench of the class described, the combination, with the stock or shank bent at its outer end to form a fixed jaw which is provided on its inner face with teeth inclined toward the stock or shank and being also pro vided on its inner face about midway of its length with a series of teeth 3, of a block adj ustably mounted on said stock or shank and adapted to engage said teeth 3, a set-screw arranged in said block and engaging the back 1o having its one end ri gidly secured to the block and its otler edd frictionztlly engaging the double jaw, suhstantizilly as shown and described.
In testiinony whereof I have hereunto ef fixed my signature in the presenceof two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID ROBERT RAMSEY.
Vitnesses:
OLIVER BLossER SAMUEL PORTER.
