, SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,472, dated June 6, 1899.
Application filed March 26,1898.
To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH 0. WHITE, of
to the accompanying drawings, vin which- Figure l is a top view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig.
-3 is asection on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig; i is a section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
My invention is a combined pistol and knife in which the pistol, made up of a barrel and a breech-piece, is fired by releasing a belt or strikereontained within the breech-piece, to which piece the blades of'the knife are sepistol servesas a handle tol, and B B the knife-blades. The barrel A is preferably made by boring out a block A and swings on the pin a, so that it may be tipped up for the insertion or ejection of the The knife-blades B B are secumd by the pin b'to the breech-piece bfland theknife-blades swing on this pin b. The
pins ab b. serve also to hold in place the side pieces D D and the. springs b b for the knifeblades, and the saidside pieces DD and the 7 I 'i' barrelA-in-proper relation to each other. The breech-piece b is bored out to receive the firing-bolt a, to which is fast the collar'.
Springs 1) b hold the breech-piece 'b and the a which supports the striker a, which slides in the bore in the breech-piece bflthe striker atbeing notched at a to receive the trigger- .The spring a is coiled around thefiri-ng- "bolta, one end of the bore in the breechpiece b and the striker a serving as abutments for the spring. The trigger D is mounted in .a slot in the side of the "breechpiece bjand carries at its lower end the catch d and is provided. nearits upper end with the notch d, which, isenga'gedby shoulder-cl on safety-catchd The trigger D is held in place by the spring.d The safety-catch d is a lever fulerumed atzd and provided 'with the shoulder (i which engages the notch din-- Serial No. 675,250. (No model.)
leased the catch d must be swung forward on its fulcrum againstthe force of the spring (1 The barrel A is held'in place by the catch F, which moves endwise in a slot in the breech piece I) and is held in engagement with a notch in the blo'ck A by the spring 61 Mounted on the under side of the block A is the rod This rod is provided at one end with a shoulder h, which bears against the rim of the cartridge, and at the other end the rod H is curved to form handle h so that when the barrel is swung on the pin a the handle it -H,which is held in place by screw-heads h h.
may be grasped, the rod H moved endwise,
and the cartridge extracted.
- Secured to the breech-piece b between the blades B B is the'lever M, pivoted on the pin.
,A a'ndthe collar a", so that if the safetycatch (1 should be released the firing-bolt a To cook the pistol, the curvedarin 1 fast to-the firing-bolt a is grasped and the firingbolt a is pulled out, carrying with it the "striker a until the forward end of the striker a is engaged by the catch don the trigger B, after which the firing-bolt a and the colits normal position by the lara maybe pushed back into place, the pistol then being at full-cock, but being prevented from accidental discharge by the safety-catch cl andthe shoulder m on Iever M.
. To discharge the pistol, the breech-piece 'b? isgrasped in the hand, the thumb .resting against the safety catch d and the trigger D 7 and one of the fingers of the hand bearing ontthe finger-piece m of the lever The. thumb is pressed, forward to disengage the. safety-eatch-d?, and at the same-time lever M is swung on the pin m by the pressure of the finger 'andthe trigger is pressed down, disengaging the catch d from the striker a,
which is thrown forwardby the springa and strikes against the collar a thus throwing the end of the vfiring-bolt a? against the rim of the cartridge a, thereby exploding the cartmdge.
knives does not interfere with the aim of the firer, and the weight of the knife blades in their open position balances the weapon and aids materially in obtaining accuracy of fire.
' lam aware of Patent No. 49,784, dated September 5, 1865, and Patent No. 53,473, dated March 27, 1866, both granted to A. J. Pe'avey,
and I disclaim all shown in them, for in my combined pistol and knife the pistol is adapted tobe fired by the forward action of a bolt and the knife blades are secured to the breech-piece ofthe pistol, and by this construction I obtain the advantages above referred -to.
What I claim as my invention is-- The combined pistol and knife above described, made up of a block A, bored to form the barrel of thepistol; a breech-piece b bored to receive the firing mechanism. and slotted to receive the trigger and safety-catches, a firing-bolt a 'and knife-blades, B B, secured to the breech-piece b JOSEPH 0. WHITE. witnessksz 7 WM. MAYNADIER,
H. P. GUILLO.
