SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,816, dated November 8, 1898.
Application filed Ct0be1 30, 1897. Serial No. 656,939. (N0 model-l T0 all whom, 25 may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FRANKLIN HAR- RISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Madison and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to cuff-holders; and the object is to provide a device of this Acharacter which shall be simple of construction, inexpensive of manufacture, and easily applied to and removed from the cuff and shirtsleeve.
lVith this object in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved cuff-l holder, showing the jaws in their normal position. Fig. 2 is a view showing the sleeveengaging jaws compressed in order to open the cuff engaging jaws. Fig.' 3 is a view showing the cuff-engaging jaws engaged with the cuff, and Fig. I is a view showing the cuff attached to the sleeve of a shirt.
In said drawings, l and 2 represent two plates the outer ends of which are formed with cuff-engaging jaws a l) and the rear ends of which are formed with sleeve-engaging jaws c CZ. The plate l intermediate its length is provided with parallel slotted ears 3, which receive studs 4, projecting laterally from the plate 2 to permit of a vertical movement of said plate relatively to the plate l. The plate l is also provided with ductile strips 5, which extend through the coil of a spring 6, the arms of which exert their energy against the plates l and 2 at the rear of the parallel ears, whereby the jaws d and ZJ are normally held together.
7 denotes a cam-lever having studs '7, that project through the slots of the parallel ears. By swinging the free end of this lever rearward the jaws c CZ will be compressed, and these, together with the jaws a b, will be locked in that position.
In applying the holder the jaws c d are compressed with the forefinger and thumb,
I so as to open the jaws d b, thus permitting the edge of the cuff to be inserted between said latter'jaws. The spring will then clamp said jaws sufficiently tight upon said cuif to prevent its accidental disengagement therefrom. In this position a portion of the shirtsleeve is tucked between the jaws c d, and by swinging the end of the cam rearward both sets of jaws will be caused to clamp the object between them, and thus firmly hold the cuff in position.
One of the important points of my invention is the ease with which the device may be manipulated, it being understood, of course, that in attaching it only one hand can possibly be used. due mainly to the fact that the jaws a and b are normally held together by the spring, so
.that after they have been engaged with the cuff it requires but one hand of the wearer to engage the jaws c cl with the shirt-sleeve and fasten it therewith by the cam-lever.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A cuff-holder comprising two pivoted plates, opposing clamping-jaws at the ends of said plates, one set held normally closed, and means for closing the other set and locking both sets, substantially as set forth.
2. A cuff holder comprising two sets of jaws, one set' held normally closed and the other set normally open, and a' cam-lever for closing the open set and for locking both sets in a closed position, substantially as set forth.
3. A cuff-holder consisting of two plates provided at their ends with opposing jaws, oneset of jaws being normally held open and the other set being normally held closed, said plates pivoted together to have a vertical movement with respect to each other and independent of their pivotal movement, and a cam-lever for locking the two sets of jaws together, substantially as set forth.
The facility of attachment is IOO Ll. A cuff-holder comprising two plates having two sets of opposing jaws, one set provided with parallel slotted ears and the other plate with studs to engage slots, a spring interposed between said plates for holding one set of jaws open and the other set of jaws closed, and a oan1-leverl1avng studs project in g into the slots of the parallel ears, whereby said plates may be clamped together to lool:
JOHN FRANKLIN HARRISON.
