VILLIAM R. JENKINS, OF BELLEFONTE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE JENKINS IRON AND TOOL COMPANY, OF HOIVARD, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOOL-H EAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 612,002, dated October 4, 1898. Application iiled December 9, 1897. Serial No. 661,300. (No model.)
To r/,ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. JENKINS, of Bellefonte, in the county of Centre, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in rlool- Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure lis a perspective View of my scraperhead 5 Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section through the same, and Fig. 3 a cross-section on the line x of Fig. 1.

The design of my invention is to provide a tool-head that will possess the qualities of lightness, strength, and cheapness of manufacture; and to this end said invention consists in the scraper-head having the features of construction substantially as hereinafter specified.
The particular tool whose construction I have improved is a scraper-head, and in the manufacture of such head a sheet or plate of iron or steel is bent into the shape shown, which comprises a straight or substantially straight main or body portion A and an upwardly and inwardly curved portion B, that terminates in a tang or shank C, by which the head may be connected by welding to the usual handle that is from twelve to sixteen feet long. To stiffen or strengthen the scraper, I provide several parallel longitudinally-extending corrugations D and D, as shown three, all of which extend over the curved upper portion B, while but one, the middle one, which is at the transverse center of the.
head, extends well down over the body portion A toward but not reaching the lower end thereof. All three corrugations are provided on the bent or curved portion of the head, as this is the weakest point or the point where it is subjected to greatest strain and is most liable to break or give Way. Each of the corrugations has in cross-section a concavo-convex form-that is to say, on one side of the head there is a concavity or depression, while on the other side there is a convexity or projection, the corrugation being formed by 5o pressing the metal from the inner side outward. By this formation I get all the strength or stiifening required without the addition of any weight to the head, as would be the case were a solid rib used, and the lightness of the head is a material consideration.
It is to be understood that while I prefer the number of corrugations stated and the form thereof in cross-section shown I do not limit myself to these particulars, as the num- 6o ber and the form thereof in cross-section may be varied.
To form the tang or shank O, the opposite edges of the head at the rear end thereof are bent or rolled inward toward each other into the form of a tube, and a short bar of iron of a'size to fit the latter is placed within and welded thereto. The tang or shank is thus a solid one capable, as is customary, of being welded to the end of the usual handle. 7o
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A tool-head consisting of aplate shaped to form a straight or substantially straight main or body portion, and curved rearwardly at its upper end to form a handle-attaching portion, and having one or more longitudi- Y Vnally-extending corrugations in the curved portion, substantially as and for the purpose described. 8o

A toolhead consisting of a plate shaped to form a straight orsubstantially straight main or body portion, and curved rearwardly at its upper end to form a handle-attaching portion, and having several longitudinallyextending corrugations in the curved portion, one of which is carried down the body portion, substantially as and for the purpose described.
