SNOW- PLOW.
i v l SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 617,830, dated January 17, 1899.
Application filed July 16, 1898. Serial No. 686,161. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRICH IIERRAN, a citizen of the Empire of Austria-Hungary, residing at Kladrub, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snow-Flows, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to that class of vehicles designed to clear the snow from streets, roads, avenues,'and the like; and the special object thereof is to provide a snow plow of very simple but substantial construction and which, with a moderate amount of motive .power, readily throws the snow to each side of the road.
I The wedge-shaped sledges or snow-plows heretofore employed require a great expense. of motive power for their operation, resulti ng from the accumulation of the snow at the fore part of the plow, where it is compressedto such an extent that the plowcan only advance with the greatest difficulty. This in-' convenience is removed-with the snow-plow forming the object of the present invention by driving the snow to the two sides of the road by means of two screws or conveyers acting in opposite directions on a common rotating shaft, as more fully and clearly pointed out and claimed hereinafter.
The accompanying drawings show one embodiment of my invention, in which-- Figure 1 is a front View of a snow-plow. Fig. 2 is a vertical side section of the machine on line x y of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a plan view, and Fig. 4 is a side view, of a snow-plow of the same class arranged to be actuated by hand.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout all the figures.
A is the frame of the machine. B and B are the wheels. 0 is the screw-shaft. D and D are screws or conveyers. E is the plow. H designates the pinion driving the conveyers. I is a gear-wheel actuating the pinion II through the agency of the chain L. J indicates, the motor. K is a semicylindrical casing. M are cranks. N is a crank-shaft carrying the wheel I, and O is a handle.
The snow-plow is composed of the frame A, supported by the wheels B B, and the beams a of which carry at their ends the rotating shaft 0 of the screws or convo yers D D, preferably constructed of sheet i'ron and acting in opposite directions, Figs. 1 and 3. The screws or conveyers D D have their rear part covered by a semicylindrical casing K, secured to the cross bar b of the frame A, and the bars-af'of this latter carry a deflecting wedgeorplow E of reduced width between the two screws or conveyers, the said wedge or plow being adapted to deflect thev snow and to protect the gear-wheel H, mounted on the shaft 0 between the supports a and ac.- tuated by means of a chain L by the wheel I, operated either by a motor J, secured to the frame A in a suitable manner, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or by hand by means of any movement transmission, Fig. 4. 4
.The screws'oreonveyersD D", the casing K, and the deflector E are at a short distance from the ground, so as to allow the said con-' veyers to turn freely and to avoid wearing of I the parts by friction uponthe ground.
The snow-plow shown in Fig. 4 is operated I by hand and only diifers from thepreceding one in the shape of theframe A and the ar rangement for operating the wheel I. The support of this machine is formed by the frame A, provided with the wheels B B and the casing K, this latter being secured to the arched iron parts d, at'the ends of which the wheels B are arranged, Fig. 5. The shaft 0 of the screws or conveyers is supported by the horizontal parts a of the frame A and rotated'by the toothed pinion H, ac-- tuated through the agency of the chain L by the gear-wheel I, operated by means of the cranks M, secured. to the shaft N of wheel I. The upper end of the frame A is provided with a handle 0 to drive and lead the ma-' chine, Fig. 5.
This machine operates as follows: The
screws or conveyers D D'- are rotated when 1. In a snow-plow, the combination'of a ZOO frame supported on wheels; a motor and power-transmission means for actuating the conveyers; two screws or conveyers acting in opposite directions on a common rotating shaft to convey the snow, a deflector arranged at the fore part of the machine, between the two conveycrs to deflect the snow to the right and left and a semicylindrical casing placed behind the conveyers to prevent the snow from adhering to the latter and to move it sidewise, to be thrown on the sides of the machine, substantially as described and shown.
2. In a snow-plow the combination of a frame supported on wheels, two snow-conveyers acting 1n opposite directions and arranged on a common rotating shaft; a snowdeflector arranged between thetwo conveyors at the fore part of the machine; 2 semicyllndrical casing placed behind the conveyors, and cranks and means to transmit the movement for actuating the conveyers by hand, substantially as described and shown.
