ASH-CAN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 617,445, dated January 10, 1899.

Be it known that I, ESTELLE NATHAN,a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Cans, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to ash-cans; and the object of the invention is to provide a can of the above-described class which will be capable of being readily and conveniently handled, which will be adapted to receive refuse of diiferent characters and prevent their intermixture, and which will readily admit of the collection of each of said classes without the claim hereto appended.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved ash-can with the cover in position; Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 with the cover removed; Fig. 3, a plan View with the cover removed; Fig. 4, a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 a view of the bottom of said can.

Like letters refer to like parts throughout the several views.

To more readily understand the utility of my invention, it is necessary to know that it is quite frequent in thelarger cities to require that refuse be preserved in separate and distinct packages which are designed to be collected by different collepting-wagons. Hence the necessity for a number of suitable receptacles, which necessitates material inconvenience in handling and loss of space in storing.

In the accompanying drawings, a denotes a skeleton'frame, said frame comprising two annular bands 6L2 a the wider surfaces of which are vertical,said bands being connected by vertically-extended bands I), which are firmly secured thereto by any suitable means or made integral therewith, if desired. These handles are preferably attached to the annular vide handles d to said skeleton frame to faband alalthough they may be attached to any suitable point without departing from my invention. The lower annular band a is provided with an inwardlydirected annular flange f, which isprovided with transverse strips f f and f whereby a skeleton bottom is formed.

The parts heretofore described form a skeleton frame which is adapted to receive a plurality of receptacles g g 9 that are of the form of a sector of a cylinder, the straight walls of which are adapted by contact with the adjacent straight walls of its neighbors to retain the various cans in the proper relation, while admitting of a ready removal of oneindependent of that of either of the others. Each of the receptacles g g g is provided with suitable means to facilitate its removal, preferably in the form of a handle, as h 72. k pivotedto each in such manner as will admit of the adjustment of the cover of the skeleton frame without interfering in any way therewith.

Myimproved can when assembled,it will be readily observed, comprises a skeleton frame adapted to receive a plurality of separate independent receptacles and retain said receptacles in such relation as to form one structure only, receptacles adapted to fit therein, and a cover which for sanitary reasons is ordinarily required and always advisable.

The operation of my improved can is as follows: The skeleton frame, with its base composed of connected flanges perpendicular with a bottom band which is connected by like narrow bands with a similar band on the top of said skeleton frame, is stored in any desired location and individual receptacles placed therein and reserved for the reception of a particular class of refuse. When it is desired to dispose of the contents of a can, its compactness will facilitate its removal, causing no additional inconvenience over and above that occasioned by the ordinary can as now in use.

The removability of each of the separate receptacles irrespective of that of its neighbors renders the can practicable for use in municipalities whose ordinances require a separate and distinct receptacle for each class of refuse.

The handle with which each of said cans is provided renders the removal of that can possiblewithout inconvenience or trouble and also permits its return without the necessity for handling the receptacle proper.

By means of the above-described device it will readily be observed that I have accomplished the ends of my invention, having produced a receptacle which while being compact in form and readily handled is adapted to keep separate the different classes of refuse. I have also produced a can that is simple in construction, effective in practice, and inexpensive to manufacture.

It is to be observed that it is not my intention to limit the invention to the precise construction and number of parts hereinbefore described, as it is obvious that the number of receptacles may be multiplied indefinitely without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, it only being necessary to modify the skeleton frame in such manner as will provide for the retention of all of the individual receptacles.-

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved holder or can for ashes and other refuse matter, comprising a cylindrical skeleton frame embodying a series of vertical strips or upright plates connected at their top ends by an encircling annular band and at their bottom ends by a right-angular encircling annular band, the vertical portion of said right-an gularannular bottom band being adapted to rest against the outer face of the vertical strips or plates While its horizontal portion forms an annular bottom or base ring connected and braced by cross-webs, and a series of independent sector-shaped receptacles nesting together so that said series collectively fill the whole space within the circular skeleton frame and constitute a series of separate or independent compartments therein, the annular top band being provided with eXteriorly-projecting handles and each one of the independent receptacles being respectively provided with a handle formed by a segmental bail pivotally mounted and conforming to the interior wall of said respective section, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
