Be it known that I, WILMER B. EAST, of Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ventilated Barrels, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in ventilated barrels; and it consists in the novel construction of the veneer-blank and of the barrel,as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a detail face view ofa part of the blank from which my barrel is made. Fig. 2 is a side View of the barrel; and Fig. 3 is a sectional perspective view of the barrel, partly broken away.

The barrel, as shown, is formed of inner and outer layers A B of veneer, which are provided with slits a 17, extending diagonally to the direction of length of the blank, so they will, when rolled into the barrel form, range diagonally to the axis of the barrel. It is also preferred to form the veneer-blank with the slits ranging diagonally across the grain of the wood,'as is indicated in the detail view of the blank in the drawings. The slits do not extend out to either edge of the blank, but such edge portions are left unsevered or continuous, the portions thus left forming the chimes of the barrel.

In forming the barrel the inner and outer layers are arranged with their slits reversed, the slits of one inclining in one direction and those of the other in the opposite direction,
