WIRE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 601,272, dated March 29, 1898.
,' Application filed .T ly- 29, 1897 ;Serial No. 646,314 (No model.)
To all whom it maycanteen t:v
Be it known that we, MICHAEL NEIL and FRANK H. BIssELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Fences, of which the following is a specification.
,Our invention has relation, in a-wire fence, to posts having removable slanting slotted or slitted brace rods or bars with removable incased wire-stretching devices and adjustable anchoring or tension straining devices detachably connected with said slantingbrace rods or bars, and in such connection it relates particularly to the general construction and arrangement of. the said several members of the fence.
The principal objectsof our invention are, first, to provide a simple, durable, ornamental, and comparatively inexpensive post and concealable means for stretching taut the line wires or runners and relieving the slanting rods or bars from direct strain of the stretched wires; second, to provide a wire fence with an efficient concealable wire-stretching device; third, to provide a wire fence with corner'or end posts each having a fluted spireshaped cap or head with a removable perforated collar having an elbow for engaging therewith a slanting brace baror rod adapted to contain a wire-stretching device ordevices and an adjustable tension and anchoring appliance for relieving the direct strain of the line wires or runners upon said slanting brace or rod and end or corner posts and embracing each corner or endpost anchored in the ground or secured into a suitable foundation, and, fourth, to provide a wire fence with posts and wire-stretching devices and anchoring means which are readily separable as well as adapted to be quicklyassembled, and, fur-' ther, in which the direct strain on the brace bars or rods sustaining the wire-stretching devicesin a -concealed condition as well as the end or corner posts is compensated for by the adjustable anchoring means embrac- 7 ing the said posts and adjustably connected with said bracerods or bars of. the fence.
Our invention, stated in general terms, consists of the improvements in a wire fence con-v derstood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which.
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a section of a fence with the several elements emcondition in the same. Fig. 2 is a top .or plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view, partly in section and partly in elevation, of a portion of a corner or other post with its accessories and a portion of the slanting brace rod or bar detachably applied thereto and adapted to contain and conceal a Wire-stretching deviceor devices. Figs 4 is a perspective view of the coupling device of the postwith its elbow for attaching the slanting brace rod or bar thereto of Figs-1 and 2. Fig.5 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of the corner or other post with its connections with a slanting brace rod or bar and the wire stretching device concealed therein embodyin g particular features of our invention. Fig. 6 is a perspective View of one of the adjust- 6o .bodying our invention illustrated in operative able wire-stretching devices of our invention the said device firmly in required position in said bar or rod.
Referring to the drawings, A represents an end or corner hollow metal post provided with a removable fluted spire-shape cap or head a.
low post A is suitably mounted and secured a perforated collar a, having formed integral with or secured to the same a recessed elbow 0. as clearly illustrated in Figs. 3 and 5. To this elbow is detachably secured a slotted or slitted hollow slanting brace rod or bar. B,
Beneath this applied cap or head a to theholresting at the bottom upon a foundation 1) or fitted directly into the ground.
0 is an adjustable tension anchoring or strain compensating appliance comprising two bars 0 and 0, one of which, 0, is formed into a ring a at one end and embraces the slanting brace rod or bar B and at the other end terminates in an eye 0 The other rod or bar, 0, is suitably fastened at one end in the slanting brace rod or bar B and at the other end in an eye 0 connected with the eye 0 of the rod or bar a and with a ring 0 embracing the post A. This ring is in movable engagement with a rod 0 provided with an anchoring-plate 0 adapted to be secured into the ground or in a suitable foundation A. The respective rods or bars 0 and c are preferably parted at or about the middle of the same and threaded to receive sleeve-nuts. or turnbucklcs 0 and 0, whereby any slackening of the said rods 0 and 0 may be taken up as well as strain upon the slanting brace-rod B and post A compensated for by the device C, hereinabove fully explained.
D is a wire-stretching device comprising a casting of substantially circular form and ribbed externally on one side or surface at (Z and on the opposite side or surface recessed or offset at d and d and provided with a lug (Z and in front provided with an overlapping or curved flange (1 adapted to enter the slit or slot of said brace rod or bar B, so as to contour with the same, and thereby when the device D is mounted or slid to place in the said slanting brace rod or bar B to prevent turning or wabbling thereof.
(i is a slotted reel mounted in and journaled to the two depending members (1 and d of the casting D and carrying a toothed wheel (1 for turning said reel 61", which on the outer end beyond the wall of the depending member (Z of the casting D is provided with a pawl-locking or tooth wheel d, engaged by a detachable gravity-pawl (Z provided with a pin d, movable up and down in a slot 01 which is provided in the member (1 of the casting D, for example, of the type illustrated in Figs. 6 and 9 of the drawings.
(Z in Fig. 10 is an arched and ribbed wedge adapted to be inserted between the inner wall of the slanting bar B and the device D, as illustrated in application in Fig. 8, to thereby securely hold the said device to place in said slanting bar or rod 13.
Each wire or runner E of the fence is adapted to be wound upon the slotted reel (1 of a device D, mounted on the brace rod or bar B, by operating by means of a wrench or other suitable appliance the toothed or ratchet wheel (Z and during the turning of the said reel the toothed or ratchet wheel (1 will be permitted to turn by lifting the gravity-pawl (1 out of engagement in sequence with the teeth of said wheel. \Vhen the actuation of the winding ratchet or toothed wheel 02 of the reel 61 has been stopped, said gravity-pawl will fall into a space between two teeth of said wheel (1 and thereby hold the same against unwinding or slip of the said reel (1 It will be manifestly obvious that as to minor details certain modifications may be made, and particularly as to the wire-stretching device, without departing from the spirit or scope of our invention, and hence we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise construction and arrangement of all the elements as illustrated and as hereinbefore explained; but,
Having thus described the nature and objects of our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a wire fence, of a post provided with a slanting slotted or slitted brace rod or bar, a wire-stretchin g device, substantially as described, mounted in said bar or rod and adapted to be wedged to position therein, and an adjustable tension or anchoring appliance connected with said bar or rod, embracing said post and secured in a suitable foundation, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination, in a wire fence, of a post provided with a slanting slitted or slotted brace rod orbar, awire-stretching device provided with a reel actuated by a toothed wheel and said reel having a locking toothed wheel engaged by a gravity-pawl, said device adapted to be wedged to position in a concealed condition against movement in said slanting brace rod or bar, substantially as and for the 100 purposes described.
3. The combination, in a wire fence, of a post provided with a detachable slanting slotted brace-rod having a wire-stretchin g device mounted in the same and adapted to be 105 wedged against movement, said device having ratchet-actuating means and gravitypawl-locking means for preventing slip of the stretched wire and an adjustable tension or anchoring appliance for relieving direct strain I 1 0 upon said slanting brace-rod and post of said stretched wires, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our signatures in the presence of two sub- 1 15 scribing witnesses.
MICHAEL NEIL. FRANK lI. BISSELL.
