Description
EDVIN DEWHURS'I MOLEAN, OF MARISSA, ILLINOIS.
sToi/E 0R FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,795, dated March 15, 1898. lppla'on 5181i February 25, 1897. Serial No. 6 25,007. (No model.)
.To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN DEwHURsr Mc- LEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marissa, St. Clair county, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stoves or Furnaces, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of stoves or furnaces capable of employment as either downdraft or updraft, and is an improvement on the device set forth in my Patent No. 574,210, dated December 29, 1896.
My in vention consists in features of novelty hereinafterfull y described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure I illustrates a vertical section through the central portion of the stove or furnace, the section being taken on the line indicated by I I, Fig. II. Fig. II is a top View of the stove-base from which the remainder of the stove or furnace has been removed. Fig. III illustrates a horizontal section taken on line III III, Fig. I.
In the drawings, 1 designates the base, on which is seated a pot 2, that is surmounted by the casing 3.
The stove or furnace may be fed through a side door 4, or may beV se1ffed by employing a magazine 6, surmounted by a cover 6, located on top of the casing.
7 designates a shaking-grate mounted on brackets 8, secured to the casing by rivets or other suitable means. The shaking-grate is provided with an arm 9, designed to be eni gaged by a suitable implement inserted through an opening l0, protected by a door The opening l0 may also be employed to admit air to the interior of the stove or furnace both above and beneath the grate.
12 designates a basket-grate composed of sections 12, each section'havin g an upper solid portion 12b, said portions constituting the firepot lining.
13 designates an outlet in the rear of the casing, through which the products of combustion pass either horizontally or downward, as indicated by the arrows.
14 designates the tire-chamber, and 15 the combustion-chamber beneath the grates.-
16 designatesa main flue extending from the base, and 17 an auxiliary iiue located between the fire-chamber and the main flue, the two yfines being separated by a division-wall 18, said wall extending down into the combustion-chamber to a considerable distance beneath the grates in the same manner and for thesame purpose as set forth in mypatent hereinbefore mentioned. The divisionwall 18 is formed with an offset portion 18 at its upper end and an opening 19, that permits communication between the iiues or from the iire-chamber I4 to the main fine.
2O designates a single double-winged damper` pivotally hung intermediate of its edges at the upper end of the division-wall 18. This damper is arranged to be swung into the position shown by full lines in the drawings, where it closes the opening I9, or swung into the position indicated in dotted lines, Fig. I, where it prevents upward passage through the main iiue from the combustionchamber, closes the upper end of the auxiliary iiue, and causes the products of combustion to pass directly from the fire-chamber I4 to the upper end of the main iiue and out to the chimney.
One end of theshaft of the damper extends to the exterior of the stove or furnace and has attached to itan operating crank 2l, by means of which the damper may be operated, the crank being provided with a knob 22. On the crank is a boss 23, to which is connected a rod 24, that passes through the stove or furnace casing and a tube 25 therein to the front of the stove or furnace. The forward end of the rod 24 is provided with a knob 26, that may be grasped to operate the damper from in front of the stove or furnace.
27 designates the ash-pit door, which carries on its inner side a tapered lug 23.
29 designates a rocking rod pivotally mount` ed in hangers 30, attached to the base l. The
forward end of this rocking rod has an offset arm 31, and the rear end is formed into a crank-arm 32, provided with an eye 33.
34 designates a rod passing through the main iiue, having at its lower end an eye 35, that interlocks with the eye 33 of the crank- ICO arm 32. The upper end of the rod 34E is formed into a loop 36, that receives a link 37.
38 is an eye attached to the damper 20, in Which eye the link, 37 is seated.
The purpose of the damper connection leading to the ash-pit door is to provide i'or the automatic opening of the damper on the opening of the ash-pit door, a result accomplished by virtue of the Weight of the parts, the object of causing the damper to automatically operate on the opening of the ash-pit door being to cause the products of combustion to pass directly from the iire-chamber to the main lue on the openin g of the ash-pit door. Otherwise such products of combustion would descend on the opening of the ash-pit door and escape into the room containin g the stove or furnace. When the ash-pit door is again closed, the rocking rod 2S) is turned by the tapered lug 28 striking the arm 3l, and the crank-arm 32 is elevated7 thereby raising the rod 34, after which the damper 2O may be operated by grasping the knob 22 or the knob 2G.
I claim as my inventionl. In a stove or` furnace, the combination of a casing, an outlet from said casing, a main flue, an auxiliary lue7 said outlet being arranged to communicate With both of said iiues, a single double-Winged damper commonto both iiues and arranged to control both of said lines, an ash-pit door, and means whereby said damper is operated on the opening of said ash-pit door, substantially as set forth.
2. In a stove or furnace, the combination of a casing, a main flue, an auxiliary flue, a sin gle double-Win ged damper common to both iiues and arranged to control both of said iiues, a rod loosely connected to said damper, a rocking rod pivotally mounted at the base of the stove or furnace and connected to said rod. an ash-pit door, and a tapered lug carried by said door, arranged to operate said rocking rod, substantially as set forth.
EDWIN DEVHURST MCLEAN.
In presence of- E. S. KNIGHT, N. FINLEY.
