Description

JAMES CORTLAN, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND. v i.
SHOWER-BATH.
y Specification of LettersvPatent No. 6,047, dated January 23,51849.
To dll whom t may concern:
Be it kno-wn that I, JAMEsCoRTLAN, vof the cityy and county of Baltimore and State of- Maryland, have invented a new and useful Combination Shower, Douche, and Jet Bath, and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, whereof- Figure 1 is a general perspective view having a part of one side and the door 'partly broken out to exhibit the interior Fig. 2 is a top view, of the bath, Fig. 3 a perspective view of the interior of the water cistern, and Fig. 4 a vertical section of the same exhibiting the douche tube shower pan and one of the jet arms.
The purposes which I havehadinview in the invention of this bath are 1by means of suitable elevating apparatus -to enable the bather to raise at o-nce as large a quantity of water as he may desire to use and thereby to prolong his bathing at pleasure without stopping to replenish the cistern. 2, by making the whole system of tubes and jets rise and fall with the water receptacle, to adapt the bath to bathe persons of different heights or to bathe different parts of the same person without extending to the whole body. 3, by means of separate valves constantly under the control of the' bather the shower jets or douche may be taken either with full and strong currents or Agently' and intermittingly at his option.v 4, by lowering the whole interior apparatus and, letting water iow lgently through the lower jet pipes only the lower extremities may be bathed. This advantage adapts it to persons who dislike the wetting of the hair.'v
In the drawing Fig. 1, B is the cistern, C is the movable pan attached to the cistern above it, by bayonet joints e, or other equivf alent means. P is a pipe descending from the bottom near the backof the cistern and conveying the current to the succession of curved horizontal jet pipes a, a', a. These jet pipes have holes opened near their upper sides but about one eighth of the periphery therefrom inclined inward so as to throw their jets toward a central space. Each set of curved arms is at-tached to a vertical section of tubes E, E, E, sliding with friction upon the part above it by which the vertical distance apart of the several arms may be adjusted and the force with which the water will be thrown from the lower arms without throwing any from the upper,1 may be increasedA or lessened. at pleasure.v W is ka windlass winding'up `by the winch fw the cord R, which elevates the water cistern and the parts connected therewith. The .click c acting on va ratchet wheel retains the cistern at anydesiredheight.` (l,
is the door, partly cut away to exhibit .the interior. r and 1" are cords passinggover pulleys p and p toregulate the opening of the respective valves.'v The whole apparatus is sustained by the frameAfand'surrounded by oiled muslin or other suitable sides S S.
Fig. shows the arrangement of the parts j interior `to the cistern B ytogether with the vpulleys P', P, 'over which passesvthe suspending rope R; and the pulleys p pf over" which pass the valve lcords r, Wu Itvalsotexhibits the jet arms a, a, the windla'ss W- and the click c. M is across bar-resting `on the top of the frame A and supporting the pul-. leys P, P, which sustain the cistern and its appendages. G, G, show the positions of the guide rods passing through they guide' N' wingsg, g,'which parts are also referred toy bythe same letters in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 3, are exhibited the valve V which closes the passag'enear the rear of the cistern which leads to the pipe P, and the jet i y S5 I I arms therewith connected, as above described. It also shows the valve V which closes the passageto the douche. and to the y shower pan above represented. Both these valves'are weighted to insure complete c losure even ywheny little water is in the cistern.
In Fig. 4, are seen the central valve V `which opens and closes the douche tube D,
the pulleys p, p, over which passesv the cord pipe P.
To use thisv bath the cistern is loweredy by f thek winch w to a sufficient distance to allow of being conveniently lled. It is then raised so as to give the water the desired i fr, theshower pan C and a portion of the` 'l f jet arm a with the tube E and connecting extent of fall and the bather wishing to'receive the head shower bath, attaches the pan C, takes his position, (either standing or sitting) within the bath and by the cord 1" raises the valve V. If the jets are required, at the same time both the cords r and r are drawn. When the douche is desired either by itself or in connection with the less heavy according to the height to which the bather raises the valve V and if the` jets and douche be simultaneously required, both cords are drawn at once as before.
Either cold or warm water may be used in this bath and by means of the partition u hot and cold water may be used at the same time and during the same operation.
I contemplate in some cases making the cistern double, that is, .having a cylinder surrounding the valve V forming within B a receptacle of smaller dimensions into which water of one temperature may be poured, leaving the exterior annular space for water of a dierent temperature adapt ing it to both hot and cold bathing during one operation. f
Having thus fully vdescribed my invention I may add that I do not claim as my invention the combination of lateral jets with a rising and falling cistern, but V Y 1. What I do claim is the combination of the showering pan C, a divided cistern, and horizontal arms as herein described whereby the head may be showered with water of one temperature and the lower parts of the body with water of another temperature during the same operation.
2. I also claim in combination the douche bath, the divided cistern, and tubes with horizontal jet arms as herein set forth to give a douche to the head and a shower to other parts of the body of a different temperature.
3. I also claim making the showering pan C capable of being separated from the cistern and of thereby making way when required for the use of the central `douehe tube D as herein set forth. j
4. I also claim the adjustable sliding section tubes E, .E &c. having horizontal movable arms a, a', &c. with jets as herein described capable of being brought nearer to or more remote from eachother for the purpose of concentrating more or less the shower thrown on the lower parts of the body, not intending in these claims to limit myself to the eXact arrangements of parts .herein described, but to vary the same at pleasure while I attain the same ends by means substantially the same.
