w Bm GL m .3 M J Patented Feb. 8, 1898.
WITNESSES PATENT JESSEE '1. HIGCBEE, OF MILLVILLE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES L. SMITH, OF SAME PLACE.
SPRINKLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,601, dated February 8, 1898.
Application filed February 23, 1897. Serial N0. 624,612. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEssEE T. HIGBEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Millville, in the county of Cumberland, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sprinklers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to sprinklers; and it consists of a novel construction and assemblage of devices whereby I am enabled to secure better results than heretofore, provision being made for adjusting the means by which the sprinkling is effected in an expeditious and effective manner.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth,
and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a sprinkler embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a discharge-nozzle, the same having the lug or tongue 13 projecting therefrom, said nozzle having located at or near the extremity thereof a protecting-wall 0, whereby the water or other fluid is prevented from running back upon the attendant during the manipulation of the sprinkler.
D designates the head employed, the same consisting of a conical or other shaped shell or deflector, which is provided with a recess or groove E, in which the tongue B is inserted, said head being pivotally attached'to said tongue.
F designates the adjusting device or rod employed, the same having an extremity pivoted to the head D and passing through a suitable opening in the wall 0, while its other extremity is movable and guided in a lug H, attached to the nozzle A.
J designates the intermediate portion of the adjusting-rod, which is provided with screw-threads which are engaged by a rotatable sleeve or handpiece-K, the latter having ball-bearings M on the extremity thereof, said ball-bearings being held between the washer N, which is suitably supported, and said handpiece.
The operation is as follows: When the water or other fluid is discharged through the nozzle, it will impinge upon the head D and will be sprayed, as is evident. When it is desired to adjust the angle or inclination of the head D, it is only necessary to rotate the handpiece K to the desired extent, whereby the sprinkler will be raised or lowered, as is apparent, it being of course understood that the handpiece can be readily rotated, although it is prevented from longitudinal movement, while the adj Listing-rod F is moved longitudinally by the rotation of said handpiece, thereby effecting the desired adjustment of the head.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. Adischarge-nozzle havingapivoted head on the front thereof, a rod pivoted to said head and passing through a depending wall, and a rotatable handpiece on said rod for reciprocating the same.
2. In a discharge-nozzle having a conicalshaped head attached thereto, an adj usting rod attached to said head, and a rotatable handpiece for imparting longitudinal movement to said rod.
3. A discharge-nozzle havinga lug or tongue projecting therefrom, a conical-shaped head D having a recess therein,in which said tongue is located, an adj usting-rod F having one end pivotally attached to said head, and its other 8 5 end suitably guided and supported, an intermediate portion of said rod being screwthreaded to engage a handpiece, a washer suitably supported, and ball-bearings intermediate of'said handpiece and washer.
4. A discharge-nozzle having a head, pivoted thereto, and an adjusting-rod, having one end pivotally attached to said head, and its other end guided and supported in a lug attached to said nozzle, an intermediate por- 95 tion of said rod being threaded to engage a handpiece, a Washer supported on said rod, and ball-bearings intermediate of said handpiece and washer.
JEssEEI T. HIeBEE.
