Description
(No Model.)
L. HEREIN. BOLT LOOK FOR RAILWAYS.
Patented Dec. 21
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEMUEL HEREIN, OF TIMPSON, TEXAS;
BOLT-LOCK FOR RAILWAYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 595,775, dated December 21, 1897.
Application filed January 9, 1897.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEMUEL HERRIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Timpson, in the county of Shelby and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt-Locks for Railways; and I do declare the following to be a full, olear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in bolt-locks for the fish-plates on the meeting ends of railroad-rails; and the object is to provide a simple, durable, and eifective device of this class.
To this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference numerals indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bolt-lock in position on the rails. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the opposite side of the rail, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section through one of the bolts.
1 1 represent the contiguous ends of the rails, 2 and 3 the fish-plates, and 4 4 the bolts, which pass through the fish-plates and rail to secure the whole together.
Each of the bolts 4 is formed with the usual rectangular head 5, and the threaded end of said bolt is formed with two parallel plane faces 6 6, by means of which the threaded end of the bolt can be grasped by a wrench to turn it.
7 represents the locking-plate, formed with Serial No. 618,593. (No model.)
a series of rectangular transverse recesses 8 8, which engagethe heads of the bolts to lock them in position. It will be seen that the bolt-orifices in the fish-plate 2 and the rails are plain, while the alined orifices in the fishplate 3 are threaded to receive the threaded end of the bolt, thus dispensing with the usual nuts employed on bolts of this class. This locking-plate 7 is. removably secured to the fish-plate 2 by machine-screws 9.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
The rails 1 l and the fish-plates 2 3, in combination with the bolts 4 4 formedwith the rectangular head 5, and having their threaded ends provided with parallel plane faces 6 6, in combination with the locking-plate 7, formed with a series of rectangular recesses 8 8 in one edge, and the screws 9 9 adapted to removably secure said locking-plate 7 to the contiguous fish-plate 2, the whole constructed and arranged, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
LEMUEL HEREIN.
Witnesses:
B. M. FITE, JN. HAYS.
