COMBINATION STEAM-COOKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,604, dated February 23, 1897. Application filed September 18, 1896. Serial No. 606,256. N m l-l To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN A. HATTER, residing at Vicksburg, in the county of Warren and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Combination Steam-Cooker, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to a steamcooker, and more particularly to a combination steam-cooker capable of cooking soups, meats, vegetables, puddings, and simultaneously producing drip-coffee.
Another object of the invention is to provide a steam-cooker capable of cooking a number of different articles in different compartments, thereby keeping each. article entirely separate or independent of the others; and another object is to utilize the steam for the purpose of cooking any desired number of articles and then utilizing the condensed steam for the purpose of producing dripcofiee.
Another object is to provide an improved construction of cooking-pan whereby a free circulation of steam is obtained; and another object is to provide an improved construction of pudding-pan whereby the pudding can be readily removed from the pan without breaking.
A still further object of my invention is to provide means whereby a full and complete circulation of the steam is obtained.
With these various objects in view my invention consists in the peculiar construction of the various parts and in their novel combination or arrangement, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my combination-cooker arranged upon a kitchentable and connected with a steam-generator arranged upon an ordinary cooking-stove. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of my combination cooker. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. In carrying out my invention I employ a metal receptacle A, which in plan View is rectangular in shape, but in side elevation is a peculiar construction, inasmuch as it gradually tapers upward toward the rear end, thereby rendering the rear end shallower than the forward end. The rear end is supported upon a suitable leg B, and at one corner the forward end is supported upon a leg B.
The forward or deep end of the cooker is intended to be used as a soup-compartment O, and is provided with a false bottom D, and beneath the bottom proper, E, is arranged the coifee-urn F, said coifee-urn projecting slightly beyond the side of the cooker and has an opening in the top of such projecting portion, which is adapted to be closed by a cover F. p
G indicates the steam-generator, having an open gage G at one side, and fitted upon such steam-generator is a cover G from which leads a pipe G3, which in turn connects with a pipe H, arranged upon the forward end of the combination cooker, said pipe being closed at the bottom, and near the lower end thereof an opening I is produced in the front of the cooker, whereby steam passing from the generator through the pipes will pass into the space beneath the bottom proper, E, and the false bottom D of the soup-compartment. Directly opposite'the opening I is a second opening I, which leads into a flue K, which extends rearwardly along the sloping bottom of the cooker and at K and K opens into the cooker, said openings being provided with hoods K and K for the purpose of deflecting the steam. I
A transverse partition L divides the sloping portion of the receptacle A into two compartments, the purpose of which will be explained farther on.
A supplemental or condensing chamber M is arranged upon the side of the receptacle A adjacent to the projecting end of the coffeeurn, and in order to have a communication between the receptacle A and the condensingchamber I provide openings M and M and in order to enable the steam which enters between the bottoms D and G to have access to the chamber M, I provide openings M so that a portion of the steam entering through the pipe II and opening I will pass upward into the chamber M. Openings M are also produced in the 'side of the receptacle A near the inner end, as most clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The partition L is also provided with perforations L, so that full and complete circulation of steam can behad.
A secondary flue K is arranged near one end of the cooker, and leading into the said flue are the openings 1 and at the upper end said fiue opens into the forward portion of the receptacle A, as shown at' I in Figs. 3 and 5, which opening is provided with a hood I.
Supporting-ribs N are arranged in the illterior sides of the cooker near the top thereof, and upon which .rests the supporting-rack N for the purpose of holding the pans O and O in their. proper positions within the cooker. The pans 0, four in number, are intended to cook meats, vegetables, and the like, and have perforations O in their sides, while their ends are cut away, as shown at O in order to obtain a free circulation of steam entirelyacross and throughout the cooker. The pans 0, however, have perforations O and one side 0 is made removable, as most clearly shown in Fig. 8, said side being adapted to be fastened in the guideways 0 These pans are intended for puddings only and are arranged within the rack to the rear of the partition L, and the purpose of the removable side is to enable the pudding to be readily removed from the pan without breaking. Each pan is of course provided with a cover, and the entire cooker is also provided with a cover, which cover is held in place by the wire bails P, so that the escape of steam is prevented.
Interior ribs Q are arranged upon the sides of the coffee-compartment, and supported upon said ribs is a coffee-holding bag Q. The bottom E is perforated near one end, as shown at Q in order that a portion of the steam may pass down into the coffee-compartment, and in orderto direct the said steam to the coffee I provide a suitable guide Q The conden sin g-chamber M also extends down into the coffee-compartment and is provided with a guide Q at its lower end in order to direct the condensed steam into the coffeeholding bag Q. In this way it will be seen that the condensed steam will be conveyed directly to the coffee-holding bag and thereby circulate through the colfee before entering the compartment. The coffee-urn is provided with a suitable faucet Q", by means of which the coffee can be drawn off from the urn.
Now in operation the cooker is arranged and connected with the steam-generator the same as shown in Fig. 1. The steam passes immediately to the pipe H, then through the openings I and I into the flue K, and from the flue K up through the openings K and K into the body of the receptacle, it being of course understood that the pan being previously filled with the materials to be cooked, the covers placed thereon and secured. A portion of the steam will also pass through the openings M and out through the openings M and M, thereby coming in contact with the upper portions of the pans and also into the soup-compartment. The steam will also pass upward through the opening I through the flue K out through the opening I into the forward part of the receptacle. It will thus be seen that a full and complete circulation of steam is had throughout the entire cooker, and, as the pans are all provided with perforations in their sides and openings in their ends, it will be readily seen that the passage of the steam throughout the cooker is practically unobstructed. A portion of the condensed steam will flow down the inclined bottom of the receptacle A and pass into the soup-compartment. The balance of the condensed steam, however, will pass down through the perforations Q and also down through the condensing-chamber M into the coffee-urn, and, as before described, all of the condensed steam led into the coffee-urn is carried directly to the coffee-holding bag, thereby subjecting the coffee to the action of the hot water before passing into the body of the urn, thereby providing an excellent quality of drip-coffee.
It will thus be seen that I provide an eXoeedingly cheap and simple construction of combination steam-cooker, one capable of cooking several different varieties of food at one and the same time and simultaneously producing drip-coffee from the condensed steam, and it will also be noticed that I provide two improved constructions of saucepans, whereby a free circulation of steam is obtained and also by means of which a pudding can be removed without being broken.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. An improved steam-cooker having soup and coffee compartments at one end, the opposite end being essentially trough-shaped and adapted to hold a series of saucepans, a cover and a steam pipe leading into the trough-shaped portion of the cooker the condensed steam being adapted to drop back into the coffee and soup compartments substantially as shown and described.
2. An improved steam-cooker, having soup and coffee compartments at one end, the opposite end being essentially trough-shaped, said trough-shaped portion having a double bottom, a steam-pipe leading into the spaces between the bottom and a series of saucepans arranged in the trough-shaped portion, said trough shaped portion having openings at the bottom whereby the condensed steam is discharged into the soup and coffee compartments, and the cover and means for securing the same in place substantially as shown and described.
3. In a steam-cooker, the combination with a suitable receptacle having a soup-compartment near one end and a coffee-urn arranged below the soup-receptacle, of the condensingchamber arranged upon the side of the receptacle,the steam-pipe leading into the space between the soup and coffee compartments, the fines for conducting the steam from the said steam-space through the bottom of the receptacle, substantially as shown and decribed.
4. In a steam-cooker, the combination with a receptacle having a soup-compartment at the forward end, the coffee-urn arranged below the soup-compartment, the condensingchamber arranged upon the side of the receptacle, the openings between the said receptacle and condenser, the steam-pipe leading into the steam-space and the fines for conducting the steam from the said steamspace up through the bottom of the receptacle, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a steam-cooker, the combination with the receptacle having a soup-compartment and coffee-urn, of the condensing-chamber arranged at one side of the cooking-receptacle, the steam pipe and generator, the coffeeholding bag arranged within the urn and means for conducting the condensed steam into the said coffee-holding bag, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a steam-cooker, the combination with the receptacle, of the supporting-rack, the pans arranged within the said rack, the coffee urn arranged beneath the soup-compartment, of the receptacle, the condensing-chamber arranged at the side of the receptacle, the steam-pipe and flue, said steam-space having openings leading into the condensing-chamber and fines all arranged and adapted to opcrate substantially as shown and described.
