SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561 ,387, dated June 2, 1896. A lication filed March 17, 1896. Serial No. 583,572. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EMANUEL C. GARDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tugs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters'of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in harness-tugs; and it consists in certain novel features wherebyI provide a cheap and simple device by the use of which the shafts will be firmly supported and can be quickly and easily attached to and detached from the harness.

In the annexed drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved tug. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view, partly in section, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the fastening device.

In carrying out my invention I employ a plate A, from the edges of which extend the flanges B, having their ends connected by the cross-bars 0, thus forming a long open rectangular loop to receive the saddle-strap. At its center the plate A is provided with a pin D, adapted to engage a perforation in the saddle-strap and thereby hold the same in the loop. Near their lower ends the flanges are connected by a third cross -barE, so as to form a small supplemental loop to receive the end of the belly-band if the saddle-strap is not long enough to buckle thereto. Formed integral with and projecting from the outer or front side of the plate A are two curved studs F G, to the lower one of which is pivoted a finger 11, adapted to swing around to the upper stud and form with the two studsa complete ring to encircle and support the shaft. On the under side of the lower stud F, I form an eye or loop I to receive the breeching or holdback strap. The free end of the finger H is provided with a spur or tooth J, adapted to enter a socket K in the end of the stud G.

Mounted transversely in the side of the stud G is a sliding latch L, having a hook M at one end adapted to engage a recess N in the side of the spur or tooth J and being held normally in engagement with said recess by a spring 0, coiled around the latch between the side of the stud and a collar P on the latch. The collar is threaded onto the latch, so that it may be readily adjusted to give the proper tension to the spring, and the end of the collar projects beyond the side of the stud to present a knob by which the latch may be pressed against the tension of the spring to permit the opening of the tug. The hook portion of the latch, it will be observed, is inserted through the stud and the spring and collar then secured in position, thus facilitating the assembling of the parts.

The construction and arrangement of the several parts being thus made known the manner of using the device will be readily The device is attached to the saddle-strap as above described and the fin: ger released by pressing on the sleeve of the latch. The shaft is then raised and the finger swung around it, being automatically locked by the latch.

The device is very cheap and simple in construction and efficient in operation.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A harness-tug consisting of a plate having a loop on its rear side to receive the saddlestrap and provided with a pin to engage and hold said strap, curved studs projecting from the front side of said plate, a finger pivoted to the lower stud and havinga spur at its end adapted to engage a socket in the end of the upper stud, a latch mounted in said stud and having its front end adapted to enter the same and engage a recess in the side of the spur on the finger, and a spring seated in the stud and acting on the latch to hold it in engagement with said recess.
