THOMAS JEFFERSON CAMPBELL, OF AUSTIN, TEXAS.
DOOR=CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,373, dated June 2, 1896.
Application filed November 6, 1895. Serial No. 568,142. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS JEFFERSON CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Stops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clcar, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improvement in doorstops, and it has for its object to provide a stop for swinging doors which shall be positive in its function, serving to check the door at any point in its traverse and at the same time serve as a door fastening and stop.
It consists, essentially, of a bar or brace pivoted laterally to the lower rails of a door, a bifurcated brace, two legs, and an operating=rod pivoted to the latter, whereby when adjusted by the hand the door may be kept from the wall of a room or checked in its movement at any point of its traverse.
In the drawings illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a door with the device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front view of the device as applied to a door.
Similar letters of reference in the drawings refer to like parts in both figures.
Referring to the drawings, A is the door, to the lower rail or stile of which is secured by screw it T-shaped fitting C. Pivoted to the projecting tongue of this T-shaped fitting is a bar D, which in normal position extends outward and embracing by its outward end a pair of legs pivoted thereto. bifurcated form embraces the outer end of the bar D and the lower end of an operatingrod F. A pin G serves as the axis of the four parts I3 13 D E, the latter being pivoted to the rod F by a pin II.
The rod F is clasped by a guide-plate G,-
A brace E ofposite edges. To these flanges is pivoted a cam-lever 11, provided with a finger-piece,
which serves to fasten the rod F at any delows: e will first suppose that the device is so set as that the feet or bearings of the legs B resthard against the floor to secure the door to a closed position. In this case the finger-piece of the cam would be down and the cam-lever I-I bearing hard against the rod F and serving as a lock or fastening. Bylifting the finger-piece the rod F is relieved. The rod F may now be lifted, drawing with it the brace E, the bar D, and the legs B upward. The legs 13 will new fall together until the rear one is held against the bar D and the first one impinges closelyupon its fellow, the latter bearing against bar D. The rod F is now locked by the cam-lever H and a horizontal position is reached by the outer leg B. In this position the outer or front leg serves as a door-stop. The door being swung on its hinges it can travel so far as the said outer leg will let it, the latter by its cushioned foot reaching the wash board, thus protecting the Wall against either the door key or knob, taking the place of the ordinary door-stop fastened to the floor or washboard of the room. It is obvious that the door maybe secured against movement bymeans of this device at any point of its traverse, provided the legs are forced to a bearing on the floor and there locked by the rod F and the cam-lever II.
My device is simple of construction, easy of operation, durable, and therefore desirable as a commercial article.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure-by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the short bar, the
united 1egs, the brace connecting said short stantialiy as described for securing said legs bar and legs and the operating-rod, of the to position, as and for the purpose set forth. :0 cam-lever and the fitting to which it is piv- In testimony whereof I affix my signature oted, al'l arranged as set forth to connect with in presence of two witnesses.
a swinging door. THOMAS JEFFERSON CAMPBELL.
2. The combination with the united legs, Vitnesses: of the bar hinged to a door and said legs, a FRED GARLETON, brace for operating said legs and means sub- JAMES HAMILTON COLLATT.
