Description

(No Model.)
J. R. RUSSELL. COMBINATION WASTE BARREL AND TRUCK.
No. 569,520. Patented Oct. 13, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. RUSSELL, OF LYlYN, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINATION WASTE-BARREL AND TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 569,520, dated October 13, 1896.
Application filed January 4,1894. Serial No. 495,6 i6. (N0 model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN R. RUssELL, of Lynn, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Waste- Barrel and Truck, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming'part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of my improved waste-barrel, and Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate correspending parts in both the figures of the drawings.
lVaste-barrels of this class designed for holding ashes and other refuse are ordinarily cylindrical in form to enable them to be readily handled in conveying them from dwellinghouses to the receiving-carts, the custom being to roll them upon the edge of their b0ttom, as, when filled, they are usually too heavy to carry any distance. Such cylindrical barrels easily indent on the sides in striking the edges of the cart while discharging them therein even when strengthened by reinforcing-strips, as is the ordinary custom. A rectangular barrel or box is therefore far preferable for these uses were it not that it is diflicult to transport.
My invention relates especially to providing such barrels or boxes with means whereby they may be readily moved in conveying the waste to the collecting-carts; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the barrel, and B the cover.
The box, as shown, is rectangular and is constructed from galvanized sheet metal, the upper end being turned inward at f over a reinforcing strip g. The bottom 7?. is depressed, forming a flange of double thickness 2' below said bottom. A rectangular truckframe D, of wood or metal, is rabbeted at j in the upper portion of its outer face to fit in between the flanges t, to which it is secured by bolts 70, passing through said flanges, and frame-nuts m being turned onto the inner ends of said bolts. horizontally in the side bars of the frame D, and truck-wheels q are mounted on said axles, said wheels projecting below the frame D, as shown. The box is provided at each end with a handle I".
The cover B is provided with a pendent flange or lip o, overlapping the top of the box, and in the top of said cover there may be formed a chamber w of any suitable shape, the top and bottom of said chamber being perforated at 00. This chamber is filled with a disinfectant y. This especial form is designed for use in hospitals or similar places where the waste has to remain any considerable time in the barrel, the disinfectant relieving the same from many of the objectionable features attending such use.
It will be understood that the cylindrical barrels in ordinary use may be mounted on the truck-frame and secured in the same manner described for the rectangular box, the utility thereof being practically the same. I do not confine myself to using the disinfecting-cover, as where the barrel is employed for ashes or similar odorless waste such use is unnecessary.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is The combination of the rectangular truck, D, provided with the rabbet,j, and the Wheels within said frame mounted on axles j ournaled in the side bars; the rectangular metallic box having its upper edge folded inward at, f, and its bottom depressed inwardly forming the double flange, 1 seated in said .rabbet; the bolts and nuts detachably securing said flange to the frame; and a cover for said box all being arranged substantially as specified.
JOHN R. RUSSELL.
