Description
J. D. WARREN. DISPLAY DRAWER ATTACHMENT FOR PIGEONHOLBS. 1\To.56'7,820.
(No Model.)
Patented Sept. 15, 1896.
iiiiiiiiiii! III Illllllllllllllllllllll UNITED STATES JOHN D. WARREN, on CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DISPLAY-DRAWER ATTACHMENT FOR PIG EONHOLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ea'ea No. 567,820, dated September 15, 1896.
Application filed January 27, 1896. Serial Not 577,009. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Jo n D. WARREN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Display-Drawer Attachments for Pigeonholes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to an attachment for securing a display drawer or box to a pigeonhole in such a manner that the drawer may be folded down to a position to form a shelf, and when closed forms a lid or cover to the pigeonhole.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a perspective view illustrative of. my invention, showing the drawer or box open. Fig. II is a sectional view showing the drawer or box closed. Fig. III is a View, part in section and part in elevation, showing the drawer open. Fig. IV is an enlarged sectional view showing the drawer open. Fig. V is a detail top view showing the drawer open. Fig. VI is a transverse section taken on line VI VI, Fig. V.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a cabinet having a number of pigeonholes 2 closed by drawers or boxes These drawers or boxes are designed to contain a sample of the contents of the pigeonholes of which they form the cover or door in the same manner as the front part of the drawer of my Patent No. 510,74d, issued December 12, 1893, contains a sample of the contents of the drawer.
The boxes are so connected to the pigeonholes that they'can be drawn out and then turned down to form shelves, as represented in Fig. I.
My form of attachment consists of two hinges, each having a leaf or member 4Lsecured to the box near the inner edge of its bottom and a leaf or member 5 resting on the bottom of the pigeonhole and having a slot 6, that receives a pin or screw 7, passing through a strip 8, that lies over the member 5 of the hinge, the screw entering the bottom of the pigeonhole, as shown clearly in Fig. III. The two members of each hinge are jointed together by a pintle 9.
There is a strip 8 foreach hinge, and each strip is rabbeted out to receive the member 5 of its hinge, so that the edges of the strips rest upon the bottom ofthe pigeonhole, as
the drawer is turned down into the position shown in Fig. III, and the bottom of the outer face of the drawer coming against the cabinet beneath the box that is drawnf out the box is held in horizontal position to be utilized as a shelf. To close the box or drawer, it is simply turned up on its hinges into a vertical position and then slid back until iiush with the face of the pigeonhole.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with a pigeonhole havingheaded stops, and a drop-drawer; of a conne'ction therefor comprising a pair of leafhinges, said hinges each consisting of a short leaf secured to the bottom of the drawer, a sliding long leaf having an extended slot to permit it to play a considerable distance on its stop, and a pintle whereby the two leaves are permanently connected so that the drawer, short leaves, and pintles are permitted to move back and forth with the slotted leaves, and the rabbeted strips fitting over the latter; substantially as described.
2. In a display-drawer attachment for pigeonholes, the combination of a box or drawer adapted to contain a sample of the contents of the pigeonhole, and means for connecting the box or drawer to the pigeonhole, consisting of hinges having members 4 secured to the box or drawer, and members 5 resting on 5 the bottom of the pigeonholes and having slots 6, rabbeted strips 8 fitting over the slotted members ofthe hinges, and screws 7 passing through said strips into the bottom of the pigeonhole and fittin g in said slots, substantially as set forth.
J. D. WVARREN.
In presence of-- E. S. KNIGHT, W. FINLEY.
